Latte Dock will be discontinued, and will disappear if no new maintainers appear

Latte Dock

If I am a KDE user, it is mainly for two reasons: the first is performance, and the second is the applications. To be honest, if GNOME were a little less heavy and its applications for more demanding users and not so simple, I would use GNOME. I like its interface, its dock... I was going to say that you can't have everything, but to achieve it you have to make many modifications that, at first, I'm not in favor of doing. One of them was the possibility of installing Latte Dock, and I speak in the past tense because his days are numbered.

Latte Dock is a dock designed with the KDE desktop in mind, so much so that the project has mentioned it as its own on many occasions. The latest version was 0.10, and work had started on v0.11, but in the end it won't see the light of day. His developer has lost motivation, and he no longer has time to do something that seems to be more of a hobby than anything else.

Latte Dock Says Goodbye

The main developer of Latte Dock explains it in a post short in which he also says that for Latte Dock 0.11 to see the light another maintainer would need to step forward:

Unfortunately I would like to inform the KDE community that I am walking away from Latte development. The main reason is lack of time, motivation or interest on my part. I hope this gives room and fresh air for new developers/maintainers to come in and push Latte forward.

I was hoping to release Latte v0.11 but unfortunately I can't. Releasing Latte v0.11 would mean someone would maintain it afterwards and that is no longer the case.

During the last 6 years the development of Latte was a beautiful journey and it taught me many new things. I would like to thank you all for this beautiful journey, kde community members, users, developers, enthusiasts and plasma developers.

This can be a bucket of cold water for those who are currently using Latte Dock. The bad thing is that there will no longer be new versions, if that maintainer that you mention does not appear, but the good thing is that will still be available in most of the official repositories in which it appears so far.

We cannot know if this movement has something to do with something that KDE prepares, that is, Plasma 5.25 already has a floating bottom panel, and they might be talking internally about creating a dock that doesn't require installing any new packages. But the only thing certain is that, if nobody prevents it, Latte Dock will not receive any more updates. Farewell…
