The GNOME calendar app. Start 2020 well organized

The GNOME Calendar App

The GNOME calendar application allows you to view appointments for a week or a month.

One of the traditions that have been lost in Argentina is the gift of advertising almanacs made by companies and businesses. It used to start around this time of year and ranged from the artistic with specially designed works by famous painters to young ladies who had forgotten to dress for the picture. In the middle were the pictures of animals. After all, before YouTube and Instagram were invented, cats needed a place to show themselves.
Today, with so many smartphones turning, neither calendars nor paper diaries seem to make sense to most of the people. In this post we are going to comment the calendar application that is part of the GNOME desktop.

The GNOME Desktop Calendar App

GNOME is a desktop environment with its own application ecosystem. This includes a program that performs the same functions as Microsoft's Outlook. It's called Evolution and it's optional to install.

Evolution meets email client and calendar manager functions. But, since you know that many distributions prefer Thunderbird as their mail client, GNOME includes an application sOnly for calendar management called precisely así. GNOME calendars.

On the other hand, Thunderbird now includes the possibility of managing calendars with an extension called Lightning. Of course there is no way to integrate them except that use a cloud service like Google calendars. To finish complicating everything, if you set up your Google account online and scheduled something on your online calendar, the notice on your computer will be given by Evolution (some functions of the program are installed with the desktop)

Using GNOME Calendars

If you did a minimal installation of a GNOME desktop distribution, you will probably have to install Calendars from the package manager. Also, if you want to sync with a calendar service in the cloud, you must log in using the account manager. To do the latter:

1) Open the configuration tool.

2) Tap on online accounts.

3) Select the service.

4) Complete the data.

5) Depending on the service, you may have to confirm the authorization for the connection.

The GNOME application allows us have multiple calendars. For each of them it offers us 3 display formats; day, month and year. The default view is the one corresponding to the month. Also, bring two predefined calendars; Birthdays and anniversaries and Personal. If you've already synced with a cloud service, you'll see the ones you've created on it.

The local calendar preloaded Birthdays and anniversaries it cannot be edited from the app. Birthdays and anniversaries takes the data from another GNOME application called Contacts. For some reason I can't edit the Personal calendar either. Since there don't seem to be other people with the same problem I guess it is because I am using the minimal Ubuntu installation and some application is missing. Evolution may need to be installed.

Adding data to the Birthdays and Anniversaries calendar

1) If you don't have it installed from the package manager, install the Contacts application.

2) Open the app and choose to use a local address book.

3) Tap on the plus sign to add a new contact.

4) You will see a form with predefined fields. Fill in the details. If you are not interested in any field, delete it by clicking on the trash can icon.

5) Click on the New Detail button and in the drop-down menu click on Birthday.

6) Fill in the birthday date. It doesn't matter if you complete the year or leave it as is.

7) Click Add.

From now on you will see the birthdays of your contacts on the corresponding date.

Adding a new local calendar

To add a local calendar that can be edited from the app, do the following:

1) Click on the rectangle-shaped icon next to the magnifying glass.

2) Click on Add calendar.

3) Give it a name and determine a color that identifies it.

4) Click Add.

The procedure for deleting a calendar is the same. You just have to go to Manage calendars, click on the calendar and then on Delete.

Adding appointments to the calendar

By pressing the rectangle button (it is supposed to be a calendar) we can determine which local and online calendars are displayed. The window is only one, that is, if you have 5 different appointments scheduled in 5 different calendars, they will all be shown in the box corresponding to that day.

To add an appointment to a calendar do the following.

1) Hover the mouse pointer over the day in question.

2) Write the name of the event and select the calendar from the drop-down menu.

3) Click on Edit Details and complete the form.

4) Click on Done.

To delete an appointment, click on it and then on Delete events.

You can also directly access the details editor by pressing the + sign at the top left of the application. In this case, you must write the date of the appointment.

Remember that if you made changes to the calendar of an online service using another application or the web, you must click on Synchronize calendars.
