Open source kernel: beyond Linux ...

Open source kernel

When talking about a free and open source kernel, the first that comes to mind is always Linux, right? But there are more kernels and open source operating systems, as you well know. Some examples are FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, ReactOS, Android, FreeDOS, and a long etc.

In this article I will try to cite some other cool open source projects that you can analyze or simply meet them out of curiosity. So if you want to know the complete list, I invite you to continue reading ...

La list of some operating systems (and therefore kernels) or open-source kernel are:

  • Linux: of course the one we know best ... Watch.
  • ReactOS- An open operating system that tries to be compatible with native software for MS Windows. In fact, the WINE project and ReactOS have an interesting symbiotic relationship that I have talked about at other times. VIEW.
  • FreeDOS- A complete, free and open DOS environment. You will surely know it because many laptops come with it pre-installed. VIEW.
  • BSD: the BSD world has various systems like Dragonfly BSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc. All full open source operating systems.
  • OS Collapse- A complete open source operating system specially designed for a post-apocalyptic future (literally). VIEW.
  • SCRATCHS: a special operating system for ARM and that is widely used in the Raspberry Pi as an alternative to Linux and others. VIEW.
  • OpenIndiana / Illumos- Operating systems arising from the OpenSolaris fork. VIEW
  • HaikuOS: is an open source operating system inspired by BeOS. VIEW
  • Senerity OS- A free and open source operating system created by Andreas Kling. It was designed to be a Unix-like. VIEW
  • GNU Hurd: You already know that GNU has its own free kernel, although its development is slow. VIEW
  • MINIX: the * nix that Linus would be inspired by, and from which he would start to solve some of the things he did not like about this Tanenbaum system is open source and specially written to be studied. VIEW
  • FreeRTOS: an open operating system with microkernel and for Real-Time systems. It is under the MIT license. VIEW
  • KolibriOS: it is a fork of MenuetOS. Written in assembler and for x86 platforms. VIEW
  • Plan9- A Bell Labs operating system and built on the foundations of its UNIX predecessor, but with some innovative additions. From it comes, for example, the / proc directory on Linux. VIEW
  • Inferno: another of the same Bell Labs, and created in the experience acquired in the Plan9 project. VIEW
  • L4: second generation of a Unix-like microkernel that we have already mentioned in other articles. VIEW
  • Fuchsia: a Google operating system for RTOS systems that was talked about during its launch and that many saw as a threat to Linux and a replacement for Android ... although it was not like that. VIEW
  • Hellenes: multiserver and microkernel operating system. VIEW
  • Blog_OS- An open source operating system written in the Rust language. VIEW
