KDE Plasma Plans for 2017: Three Annual Releases, Global Menu, Wayland, and More

Recently KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS arrived, but the news of this very important project does not stop there and coincidentally these days a meeting of developers in which they left well detailed lKDE plans for 2017 and 2018. Which cover several fronts and to tell the truth, these are issues that allow us to get excited about a high-level desk, something to which we are accustomed but that can always be improved.

A central aspect of developing KDE for the future in the short term is the change in the development cycle, which will go from four annual releases to just three, something that they base on the longer time they will have to work without the pressure imposed by having releases every few weeks. So things, KDE Plasma 5.9 will arrive in January, KDE Plasma 5.10 in May and KDE Plasma 5.11 in September, and for KDE Plasma 5.12 the release date will be in December., which would leave the number of releases at four but the developers clarify that they are particular cases and will not be the norm. Already in April 2018 KDE Plasma 5.13 will arrive, and in August 2018 KDE Plasma 5.14 LTS will be released.

An important novelty in terms of design and functionality is the global 'Mac OS X' menu that will be part of KDE in the future, perhaps as soon as KDE Plasma 5.9. There will also be improvements in the theme icons, specifically in the Breeze theme (which will even come to the version of Firefox that they include on this desktop) and the localization of KDE will be improved.

Of course, if you have to aim somewhere, it is towards mobile, and in that sense the KDE developers are putting a lot of effort to improve the integration of Wayland, which in turn allows a better performance of the Kirigami framework (on which they base their work 'mobile' and converged apps) but going back to this graphical server, they are improving support for multiple display configurations and also for scaling and virtual desktops so we will probably see some of this in the next few months.

If it's a decent Unity-style global menu (that removes the menu from the window and doesn't duplicate it on the panel like MATE does) and I'm heading to KDE: D
