The developers of the popular KDE desktop environment have long tablecloths, today the arrival of version 5.12 that will have long-term support (LTS).
KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS is the second version with extended support since Plasma 5 was released, the first was KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS and it brought many improvements in terms of stability and performance. In this new version we will find "speed and simplicity" according to the official publication.
KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS, focused on stability, performance and maintainability
KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS focuses on improving the stability and performance of the environment and it also fixes some problems that had been presented in previous versions. Although we can find some changes, this version does not focus on news.
According to the official publication, they have made a code cleanup that accelerated desktop startup and improve overall performance. Plasma now consumes less CPU and RAM resources.
As we said before, there are not many new features in this version of the environment, however, it is noted that it is focused on users with LTS systems, so a review of the changes from previous versions is given.
Perhaps the most important novelty of this version is the support for Wayland, the new protocol for managing windows, although most still use Xorg and surely this will not change anytime soon.
The developers have promised that they will continue to release maintenance updates regarding Wayland throughout this version, right now you can test functions such as screen rotation, automatic rotation, full screen for windows, automatic composer selection, among many other things.
In the video above you can see all the changes to KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS, a version that will last for many years with active support, so it is worth a try.
Large, looks fancy. By the way Today version 1.20 of MATE has also been released!
I installed it this morning on a Kubuntu and I have verified that it consumes less memory than the previous version and the startup is slightly faster.
Great news!
