KDE Neon Pinebook remix Edition now supports 64-bit ARM laptops

kde_neon

Yesterday Jonathan Riddell through a statement I made the announcement that its KDE Neon operating system is now fully compatible with ARM 64-bit laptops.

Being a little more specific, this new release was focused on the Pinebook laptop., which is a low cost and light weight computer from Pine64 company.

Unlike traditional notebooks, This laptop uses a 64GHz quad-core Cortex A53 1,2-bit CPUARM, along with 2 GB RAM LPDDR3 and a Mali 400 MP2 graphics processor.

Instead of a hard drive using 16GB eMMC 5,0 flash memory, expandable to 64GB, the storage capacity can be extended using microSD card up to 256GB.

It supports Wi-Fi 802.11bgn and Bluetooth 4.0, has 2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 mini HDMI port and a headphone jack.

It also contains 2 speakers. The resolution of the TN LCD screen is 1366 x 768.

For those readers who still do not know KDE Neon I can tell you that this is a Linux distribution and an operating system derived from Ubuntu, but focused on developing software for the KDE open source community.

The emphasis on next-gen application packages pulled directly from KDE prior to the stable release gives developers early access to new features, yet riddled with bugs in the software.

Pinebook is compatible with Linux and Android operating systems.

About KDE Neon Pinebook remix Edition

Azul Systems has worked closely with the manufacturer of the Pinebook to create a test image that works well on these devices.

Kde Neon Pinebook Remix

The team has adapted to the KDE Neon Linux distribution and created a bootable and remixed and installable image that works on the Pinebook.

The developers have also fixed many bugs, both minor and major throughout the entire software stack, kernel, graphics drivers, Qt, packaging, and in KDE Frameworks and the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

The result shows that KDE Plasma is an excellent candidate for devices of this type. The process has also produced significant performance improvements in KDE Frameworks and KDE Plasma.

The KDE Neon Pinebook Remix OS is still under development, as some things need to be improved for a ready-to-use experience, but it is usable for everyday use.

This ARM version of the KDE Neon distribution is supported by the latest stable version of the distribution which is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver).

Under the hood, KDE Neon Pinebook Remix runs Linux kernel 3.10.105-BSP-1.2, and the latest KDE Plasma 5.13.4 desktop environment and the KDE 5.49.0 Framework software package compiled with Qt 5.11.1.

It is important to note that even though Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has the version of the kernel 4.1xxx, KDE Neon Pinebook Remix uses a version of the branch of the kernel 3.10.xxxx since at the moment the Pinebook is limited to running this version of the kernel.

Moment We can highlight that this version of KDE Neon for the Pinebook has the following:

  • KDE Neon (with the latest packages found in Ubuntu bionic (18.04))
  • The KDE Plasma 5.13.4 desktop environment
  • KDE Framework 5.49.0
  • Qt 5.11.1
  • Linux kernel 3.10.105-bsp-1.2

Finally they should know that even the system images created are in the development phase, so if you want to download this new version you should know that it is quite likely that you will find some errors.

In itself it is not an Alpha version so to speak, but there are still quite a few things to polish, to which Jonathan Riddell argues.

You can get this image of the system by going to the following link.

As you can see, there are several versions which you can see chronologically, you only have to download the latest version created, which at this time was the one from August 21 of this year.
