Install the new version of LibreOffice 6.0 on Linux

LibreOffice

Today The Document Foundation has announced the new launch of its Office suite and with it also celebrating its seventh anniversary. In this new version of LibreOffice various improvements and corrections have been implemented and above all some new functions have been added.

For those who still do not know LibreOffice, this is an Office suite which has several programs in its catalog Among which we find Writer which is intended for text processing and enriching them, Calc is a spreadsheet software, similar to Microsoft Excel, Impress is focused on handling presentations and slides, Base is a program that will allow us to creation and management of databases.

LibreOffice is a multiplatform and open source suite so we can use it in Linux as well as in Windows and Mac OS.

Among the new features of LibreOffice 6.0 we find:

  • Enhancements have been added for Writer.
  • Personal dictionaries have been improved.
  • Compatibility with Microsoft Office has also been improved.
  • Support for AbiWord, QuarkExpress and PageMaker files
  • Ability to save documents as ebook ebook files
  • OpenPGP document signing / encryption

LibreOffice has an Online version, the cloud-based version of the suite, user images are now supported and displayed in comments. Dialogs have been added and updated, while grammar correction is now available in Writer, Calc, and Impress. An interactive horizontal ruler was added to Writer, and Calc now supports basic graphics editing.

In Calc, new commands were added to select unprotected cells in spreadsheets. Using the File> Export dialog, you can now export the selection of a range of cells (or a group of shapes) in JPG or PNG. Finally, the Links dialog has been simplified, while three new ODF 1.2-compliant functions were implemented, to find and replace text using byte positions.

If you are interested in knowing a little more about the changes and improvements within this new version, I leave you this link where you can read about all of them.

How to install LibreOffice 6 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

In order to install this new version of LibreOffice in our system we must first uninstall the previous version if we have it, this is in order to avoid later problems, for this we must open a terminal and execute the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Now we just have to download, unzip and install the new version with these commands:

wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/deb/x86/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86_deb.tar.gz
tar -xzvf LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
cd LibreOffice_6.0.0.3_Linux_x86-64_deb
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Through SNAP

If you are one of those who like installation through snap packages, you can also install LibreOffice through its SNAP package, I must remember that we must wait for it to try to do so at the moment but the new version is still not found, for the installation only we must execute the following:

sudo snap install libreoffice --channel=stable

How to install LibreOffice 6 on Fedora and derivatives?

In the case of Fedora, SUSE, Gentoo or any other distribution that supports RMP packages, we can download the package that they offer us from the official LibreOffice page and proceed to install it We do this by opening a terminal and running:
For 64-bit systems

wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/rpm/x86_64/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_rpm.tar.gz

For 32-bit systems

wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/rpm/x86_64/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_rpm.tar.gz

Finally we just unzip the resulting file and install with:

tar -xzvf LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh LibreOffice*.rpm

How to install LibreOffice 6 on Arch Linux and derivatives?

In the case of Arch and its derived systems, the version found within the AUR repositories is still the test version so in a couple of days we can install this new version on our system, I leave you the command for its installation:

Sudo pacman -Sy libreoffice-fresh

Without further ado, you just have to enjoy this new version. On the other hand, if you know of any other alternative to libreoffice, do not hesitate to share it with us in the comment box.

    Is there a 32-bit version?
Maybe that's why I get an error after uninstalling my old version:
    2018-02-01 16:31:32 (821 B / s) - "LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz" saved [33522]

Are you sure your OS is 32-bit? do $ uname -a in the terminal ... if it is 32 bits then it would say "i386" or something like that .. also it seems that the error is in the file decompressor

I tried to follow the steps in the article but realized that there is an error in the path you put to install on Ubuntu and derivatives when trying to install on 64-bit machines.

    Where it says: wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/deb/x86/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86_deb.tar.gz

    It should say: wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/deb/x86_64/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz

And, after unzipping, the path it should point to is not "cd LibreOffice_6.0.0.3_Linux_x86-64_deb", the correct thing is: cd LibreOffice_6.0.0.3_Linux_x86-64_deb / DEBS

In summary, here are the steps:

    wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/deb/x86_64/LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
    tar -xzvf LibreOffice_6.0.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
    cd LibreOffice_6.0.0.3_Linux_x86-64_deb / DEBS
    sudo dpkg -i * .deb

    This is my reference: http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/6.0.0/deb/x86_64/
There you can also find the packages to put Libreoffice in Spanish.

    Greetings.

Hello everybody. Emanuel, I ask you a question, when I follow your steps to install LibreOffice from the terminal, everything is fine, until when I write the last command sudo dpkg -i * .deb the console, it tells me that it is very extensive and that I should filter it. how can I do? I am new to Linux and I am using LXLE. Thanks

      Hello Miguel.

Are you using any derivatives of Debian, such as Ubuntu? I do not know why you got that that is very extensive and you have to filter it, could you share a screenshot to find the solution? I've never had that mistake.

Meanwhile, I tell you that LibreOffice 6 is already available to install through a ppa (Ubuntu and derivatives):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: libreoffice / ppa
      sudo apt-get update

and the following is to choose:

      a) If it is the first time you install it:
      sudo apt-get install libreoffice

      b) If you already have LibreOffice installed, you update it with:
      sudo apt-get upgrade

      Greetings.

By the way, I already saw that the distro you are using is LXLE. I got confused with LXDE, hahaha.

They should update the information, for novice users like me it confuses me. Today it is easier to simply delete the previous libreoffice and reinstall using a PPA

    (only for Ubuntu and derivatives)

step 1: (If you have previous version) Delete:

sudo apt-get remove –purge libreoffice *
    sudo apt-get clean
    sudo apt-get autoremove

    step 2: then install

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: libreoffice / ppa
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install libreoffice

If you didn't have it installed, just do step 2 :)
