Huawei transferred the development of openEuler to the non-profit organization Open Atom

openEuler

Huawei is a company that for several years has worked hand in hand with various open source projects and has become a benchmark in the field and now the company has taken a big step and above all a great contribution to open source, since recently (at the 2021 OS Industry Summit in Beijing) disclosed that I made the decision to transfer the development of the openEuler Linux distribution to the Open Atom Open Source Foundation.

For those who are unfamiliar with this organization, they should know that it is a non-profit group similar to international organizations Linux Foundation and Apache Software Foundation, but taking into account the peculiarities of China and focused on organizing joint work in Chinese open source projects.

Open Atom will act as a neutral platform for further development of openEuler, not tied to a company specific commercial, and will also manage intellectual property associated with the project. China Telecom, one of the largest telecommunications operators in China, announced the use of OpenEuler in its infrastructure and presented its own edition of this distribution, launched under the name CTyunOS.

After Deng Taihua, Vice President and President of Huawei Computer Product Line, promised Euler's donation in the conference opening speech, Huawei will continue to invest and promote Euler's development from five aspects: technological innovation, green building, commercial promotion, open source. construction and development of talent.

The content of this Euler donation is understood to include: code and software packages: millions of lines of copyrights and intellectual property licenses of Huawei self-developed code, more than 8.000 software packages verified by Huawei and the community ; innovation projects: Huawei's innovative iSula, A-Tune, Stratovirt and secGear projects; Trademarks: openEuler and 30 Chinese and English trademarks of iSula, A-Tune, Stratovirt and secGear projects; Domain names: openeuler.org and its subdomains, and openeuler.io and its subdomains, a total of 4; community infrastructure: construction of a test and service system, code hosting, community operation platform and other community infrastructure.

The distribution openEuler builds on developments in the commercial product EulerOS, created as a fork of the base of the package CentOS, optimized for use on servers with ARM64 processors and it is the only Linux distribution certified by the Opengroup committee for compliance with the UNIX 03 standard (macOS, Solaris, HP-UX and IBM AIX). The differences between openEuler and CentOS are quite significant and are not limited to rebranding. EulerOS is one of five operating systems (EulerOS, macOS, Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX) and the only Linux distribution certified by the Opengroup committee to comply with the UNIX 03 standard.

The security methods used in the EulerOS distribution are certified by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China and are also recognized as meeting the requirements of CC EAL4 + (Germany), NIST CAVP (US), and CC EAL2 + (USA).

For example, openEuler includes a different Linux kernel, a newer GNOME-based desktop, includes ARM64-specific and multi-core optimizations, iSulad lightweight container system, clibcni network configurator, and A-Tune auto-tuning system.

Huawei has also donated the OpenHarmony project to Atom Open, which develops an operating system for IoT devices such as smart watches based on their own LiteOS microkernel, in addition to which it should be noted that following this trend also Alibaba has reassigned the AliOS Things operating system for low memory IoT devices to Open Atom and Tencent has transferred the operating system on time actual TencentOS Tiny (RTOS) to Open Atom.

The projects developed by the Open Atom organization also include the distributed DBMS ZNBase (supports the PostgreSQL protocol), the Pika big data storage system (interface level compatible with Redis) and the XuperCore blockchain platform.
