El Valve client, SteamYou already know that it includes the Proton project, an implementation of Wine developed by CodeWeavers and Valve itself to be able to run Microsoft Windows video games on your Linux distribution. You can already run a large number of video games, more than a thousand, of those available. So along with the thousands that already exist for Linux natively, the gaming world on our platform has taken off.
But perhaps not many Steam users know that they can also run old MS-DOS video games that you can recover thanks to one of the options in the client configuration. Surely you know DOSBox, an emulator that recreates the DOS system to be able to run native software from this old operating system. Well, you can integrate a tool within Steam, a native version of DOSBox called Boxtron.
Boxtron, like Proton, is also evolving and adding improvements with the respective updates. You should know that it is an unofficial tool, and that there are many of these unofficial tools that you can add to Steam to extend its capabilities, and they are all installed the same ...
How can you activate it to be able to play DOS video games? Well, you just have to follow the following steps:
- Download Boxtron.
- Unzip the tarball tar.xz.
- Puts content in the path ~ / .steam / root / compatibilitytools.d /
- Open Steam, and right click on the game in your game library, go to Properties.
- Between the menu that you have now in front of you, you must have Boxtron next to Proton.
- Y to play to your favorite classic game… Surely you have more than one in your list of favorite retro video games.
The truth is that however primitive they may be, although current development studios strive to create increasingly realistic video games and more possibilities ... classic video games they continue to captivate many and do not go out of style. You don't get tired of them and you always want to get them back to play them again. Nostalgia gaming!
