How to make the bottom panel and app launcher look (almost) like Windows 11 from Plasma 6

Plasma 6 with the app launcher like in Windows 11

En plasma 6,KDE hizo a large number of changes and many of them are visible to the naked eye. For example, the first thing we notice when entering an operating system with the new version of the desktop is that the panel is detached from the edges. And if we click on the start menu, Kickoff, the application launcher, also floats above the panel. Plasma is very customizable and all of this can be disabled, but this has been the default since February.

Windows 11 also introduced aesthetic changes when it arrived in 2021. As in Plasma 6, there is one that is noticeable when entering the operating system, but it is not that the panel floats. What you see when you enter Windows 11 is that bottom panel icons are in the center. When we click on the start menu we see that its "Kickoff" also floats. If you are a KDE user, you are already on Plasma 6 and you want to see the same thing, saving the distance, this is what you should do.

Plasma 6 with a little bit of Windows 11

The steps to follow are simple:

  1. We right click on the lower panel and then on "Enter editing mode." That is what it says in Plasma 6.0, and if you read this article after a few months there may be different text.

Enter KDE editing mode

  1. We click on "Add Separator" twice, which will unset everything, but now we fix it. Where exactly you add them depends on the distribution and version of Plasma. In this example add one to each side.

Add two separators

  1. All you have to do is click on one of the spacers and drag it to the right side of the icons in the lower panel. Here you have to be careful to put it in its place; If not, we can put it in the system tray and it is not what we are looking for.

Move separator

There are clear differences from what we see in Windows 11. On the one hand, you cannot make the bottom panel glued to the edges and Kickoff floating; you have to choose. And the second is that Kickoff is currently focused on its icon, not on the panel. That wasn't the case in Plasma 5 and they will probably, or so I hope, fix it in the future. One solution is to put the cursor on the right edge and lengthen Kickoff to center it by eye.

As always, in Linux we decide

The result is what you have in the header screenshot. The operating system is openSuse Tumbleweed, one of the first to upload to Plasma 6, and the step of deactivating the floating panel is not necessary because by default they have left it as in Plasma 5. By the way, this can also be done in this version of the desktop, although the position of the options is different.

And so you can have Plasma 6 with a certain feel to Windows 11. It is a possibility, and as I always say, with Linux we are the users who decide how we want to have things.
