How to create a bootable Windows 10 USB from Ubuntu without installing anything

USB pendrive Windows 10

It is likely that you find yourself in the situation of having to create a bootable USB pendrive (bootable) with Microsoft Windows 10 to be able to install this operating system on any computer. Well, you should know that from Ubuntu (it can also be done with other distros in a similar way) you can create your USB installation drive quickly and easily without having to install any additional programs.

In order to create the bootable USB pendrive with Microsoft Windows 10You just have to follow a few simple steps and, in a matter of seconds, you will have the drive available to install this system ...

What do you need?

In order to create the USB memory as an installation medium, you will only need three Key 'ingredients':

  • The ISO image of Microsoft Windows 10 that you must download from the official Microsoft website if you don't already have one.
  • A team with Ubuntu installed.
  • Un pendrive of more than 4GB, since the image will occupy about 4.3GB once it is inside the USB drive. Also, it must be empty. If you have something inside you can save it on your PC so that it is not lost or make a backup ... Keep in mind that it needs to be formatted, so the content would be lost.

No need to install anything...

Creation processes

Now to create the Microsoft Windows 10 USB installation drive, you just have to follow a few very simple steps:

  1. Insert the USB flash drive into a free port on your PC.
  2. Now, go to the Disks app that is already installed in Ubuntu.
  3. On the left side select the drive corresponding to your USB.
  4. On the right you will see the volume of your USB and an icon in the shape of gears. Click on it.
  5. In the menu that appears choose Format partition and choose FAT32 and ExFAT format. Follow the process to format the drive.
  6. Once it has been formatted, the next thing you should do is go to where the downloaded ISO image is located on your computer. Right click on it and Open with another application.
  7. Select Disc Image Mounter. That will cause the ISO image to mount to a loop drive. You will see that the new mounted drive with the content of the ISO image will appear in the file manager.
  8. Now open the drive and copy the entire contents of the ISO image. Then paste it inside the USB memory that you have formatted.
  9. Wait for the process to finish and you should have about 4.3GB occupied by Windows 10 files.
  10. Now you can remove the USB drive and you can use it to install the operating system where you need ...

Hi! I followed everything to the letter but when I choose the USB to boot from the BIOS, I get a black screen with a blinking dash. Any recommendation?

The exact same thing happens to me, could you solve it? Comment me please. Thanks!

Hi! If you got the Windows logo for a moment, wait, it may take more than two minutes to start the installation program. I imagine it happens because while checking the system it does so with the black screen and the damn little blinking dash.

I am getting an error when copying (in step 8) for having files that are too large that will not fit in a FAT32 format. And if I format it in ExFAT the PC does not recognize the USB as bootable when booting.

I'm going to try to format in NTFS to see if it works like that.

Did it work with NTFS format?

      1.    Nosferatus said

Yes, in fact it is the only way that works, at least with the Windows $ 64-bit version since there is an image file that occupies more than 4Gb. In any case, I recommend formatting the pendrive with gparted in ntfs format and managing options such as boot, otherwise it may not boot, (Obviously select boot in the Bios or with the boot function key, for example F9 in HP)

PS Thanks for sharing this method, neither Rufus nor Wintoflash nor «ostias» ...

The format has to be NTFS, yes or YES.

The maximum size of FAT32 is 4Gb. Install WoeUSB.

A tease doesn't work like that. Windows won't boot, drive isn't recognized, and operating system won't boot. A lie.
Make no mistake, this is not a campaign in favor of Windows, but I am very disappointed with Linux, also, how complicated it is, impractical, the hardware does not support Linux and it breaks. It's bullshit. They can go a little shit.

  7.   Horacio said

A Shit, All a lie, I followed the procedure to the letter and it does not recognize the pendrive, it does not exist. The linux project is a sham, no program works. Go shit.

Linux is for connoisseurs, developers, programmers, etc. Not for ignoramuses who think they are hackers because they install a game with crack or a Windows OS from usb. You should first take a computer course (or finish school) and then speak.

It's all in your head, it's living in fantasy. Linux does not work, it does not work, the hardware is incompatible, it does not work well and it breaks. A fraud. But the stupid one is the linux user who falls for these scams. charlatan, swindler.

don't get carried away by Horacio, he has less patience than a terminal patient hahaha.
linux brings many errors, very many, but it also brings a community very predisposed to solving errors.
once you get past them, linux is the best.
This guide comes with problems, as they say above, formatting the pendrive in NTFS with boot options

A friendlier option is to download Vento and open the program depending on whether your computer is 64bits or 32bits (x86) (VentoyGUI) select your usb and that's it. then they copy the windows image (.iso) to the usb and can boot the usb either in UEFI or MBR.

  11.   Yuto said

What a stupid thing. This does not work. So you can't copy the master boot record. They go and copy an article from another in English and they don't even make sure it works...

FAT32 drives are not suitable for handling large files or installing Windows. It has to be an NTFS formatted drive. For example, Windows 11 weighs about 6.4 GB in its 23H2 version, so we must perform the same procedure, but the USB drive must be NTFS and have at least 8GB of available space.
