GTA V: open source autonomous driving is here

GTA V car

Autonomous driving is not just a matter of real cars, it also reaches the world of video games, and it does it for everything great. It is precisely the successful GTA series from RockStar Games that has received it. Specifically, it has been the title GTA V, that you can use autonomous driving in your vehicles.

Everything has been thanks to a young programmer who has managed to use a webcam and the project of open source OpenPilot to make autonomous driving a reality. The developer in question is called Leon Hillmann, and he has decided to do something very interesting: use the streets of GTA V as a testing ground to test an autonomous driving system.

That way, it doesn't have to be tested on real streets. And the truth is that it works… (and it is not the first time that a RockStar game has been used for this). GTA V has some maps of streets and traffic with enough detail and realism, so it is a good place to test these types of autonomous driving systems and simulate the behavior.

According to the protagonist, Leon Hillmann, he decided to perform this test using open pilot. Being open source, anyone can modify it and adapt it to, for example, this video game. But it has not been an easy task. In addition, according to comments, need two teams. In one of them you have installed GTA V and the drivers for the Xbox controller you use. In another he uses Ubuntu with Openpilot installed and a webcam.

In this way, the webcam records what is seen on the virtual road of GTA V, that is, it is the "Machine vision sensor" that powers Openpilot, and it processes the information received in real time to control the GTA V vehicle. It can accelerate, brake, turn, ... Communication that has not been easy, since it is the hardest thing to do. It has not been easy to get Openpilot to have consistent communication with the game car.
