God of War is one of those top titles, an AAA, which has been a great success on PlayStation. There are many who would like to be able to play this video game in their GNU/Linux distro. And many are going to be very happy to know that you can now play, since God of War is on Steam and works with Proton in the Steam Play client, so you no longer have any impediment to enjoy.
In addition, this new version of God of War that has arrived on Steam comes with some improvements, since graphics have improved and they now have support for technologies like NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, among others.
If you still don't know God of War, what you are going to find in this title is a Viking universe, with Nordic gods and monsters, with which to fight and survive. The protagonist is Kratos, who now lives in the human world and has become a father again. He will be mentor and protector of Atreus, a son who is determined to earn his respect and who will be involved in a very dangerous battle, in a very hostile environment. A story that takes you from the very bowels of Olympus to some sandy forests, mountains, caves, and much more.
All with seasoned with incredible physical combat with action and gore as you face off against hulking creatures, brave opponents, and monsters that will tire you out.
As for its operation on Linux, with Proton, it works quite well. They have registered some common problems like certain cuts with NVIDIA GPUs, as it happens with other video games with advanced graphics and created for Windows, which take some time to create the shaders through Proton.
Also, keep in mind that proton support of God of War is still quite early, if you want a smooth experience you will have to wait a little longer for them to finish polishing certain sizes and go from the Gold to the Platinum version. Although it works quite well in most cases, you may need to make some corrections.
Another possibility is use Proton-GE, created by the community, and see if it improves support and performance with God of War. And it is that this GE version has DXVK_ASYNC to help reduce these jerks or stutters of the image. Of course, you should not use it with the multiplayer mode, since you will have problems with the anti-cheats.
