Gnu / Linux reaches 6,91% of Desktop computers according to NetMarketShare

Sled pingu

Many users are calling 2017 the year of the Gnu / Linux desktop. The year the free operating system conquers the desktop and desktop computers. A conquest that seems more idealized than real, but even so, the Penguin's conquest in this area is advancing.

The NetMarketShare company has made a survey on the use of this operating system, reaching 6,91% of the computers during 2017. A figure that seems to be unreliable but that shows that the trend of this operating system continues to grow in recent months.

The data provided by NetMarketShare they have not been very contrasted and many users doubt that 6,91%, by the way, the highest figure that Gnu / Linux has managed to have on desktop computers. This figure could actually be much less, putting it around 6% (or even a little less) and falling below Apple's macOS, but still close to this OS.

NetMarketShare results are not very reliable but revealing on the trend of the penguin system

The results of this survey have been based on the operating systems of the computers that have accessed 40.000 web pages during the month of September. In addition, in this survey ChromeOS has been considered as a Gnu / Linux system, something that for many users should not be the case. This base can give problems although it is also true that it can give an approximate idea of the users' computers.

In any case, the figure is doubtful but the trend is not. That is, the trend in recent months indicates that Gnu / Linux is growing among home computers and laptops, being an option to consider in addition to Windows 10. And maybe when video games arrive in the same way as versions of popular programs, the user ends up choosing this operating system and its philosophy Do not you think?

    Isn't it 4.83%?
    I don't see that 6,91 anywhere.

Well headed the article. Things aside that figure is not believed by anyone, that would mean that there are just under 140 million GNU / Linux users! hmmm we would like. Truth be told, it is only to take applications like KDE Connect in the Google Play repository for smartphones and check the amount of downloads and it is over 100.000 users. Another application like Clementine suspiciously also registers the same amount of downloads (and that is also released for Windows), to that we must add 600% more being positive, counting Gnome users and others, but subtracting the same for users with more than two installed distributions (which can be quite a lot) ... in the best of cases we do not exceed 700.000 users.

It's just entering http://distrowatch.com/ and realize that you do not reach 40.000 active users worldwide by adding all the registered distributions.

@Shalem Dior Juz I am a Linux user, and this year I have installed Linux on more than 10 PCs of friends and family that had windows home edition and none is active in distrowatch; not even I am.
I believe that Linux has grown exponentially thanks to distros such as deepin, elementary and Mint that achieved very polished modern environments, assuming that for the home user the OS enters through the eyes, because it uses only the browser in 70% * my estimate from experience as a technician*.
Desktops like KDE Plasma are also very popular with users.
I take these measurements with great optimism.

I could say that the quota is at 5%, which is already very good, I am sure that by 2020 it will have already surpassed Mac Os. Besides, I have done my bit by installing and offering the operating system online and the truth is that acceptance has grown a lot.

Colleagues, I think the same as many, Linux has grown a lot, I personally have installed Linux to several clients and acquaintances kde Neon, Mint in Notebokk and Desktop CPUs ,,,. We cannot be guided by distrowatch…. and 5 or 6% is not unreasonable…. And it will also continue to grow.
