One of the most popular and practical gadgets that I have used in recent years has been the Google Chromecast. A Google gadget that allows us to bring what our computer or smartphone sees to a television, projector or large screen. However, this device does not have software for Gnu / Linux. We only have the Google and Chromium web browser, but in both cases its performance is not very good.
The VLC player has recently managed to acquire the features of Chromecast but it has not been the only one. Developer keredson has created an extension for Gnome that will allow us to send any file from the desktop to the Chromecast device. This program is called Gnomecast. Unfortunately Gnomecast not an official gnome extension. But we can install it on our Gnu / Linux distribution. There is official Gnomecast repository It not only contains the installation files but also has the installation guide, but the process is very simple to perform.
First we have to install Python PIP. We will achieve this by typing in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install python3-pip sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
After installing this software, We can now install Gnomecast. To do this, we open the terminal (if we have closed it) and execute the following:
sudo pip3 install gnomecast
It is very important execute it with the sudo command since otherwise, when we execute Gnomecast we will have problems when viewing it. Once we have installed this, we can run Gnomecast, for this we either search for it or simply run the Gnomecast command in the terminal.
The screen that will appear will allow us select the device to send the file to, the file we want to execute and the controls for displaying that file. Something simple and similar to any multimedia player.
Installation and configuration of Gnomecast is something straightforward and simple, but if you think it is difficult for you, you can always choose to use the latest version of the vlc player What do you choose?
