GNOME plans to move the application menu within its own window

Current GNOME menu

GNOME developers continue to make modifications to their interface and today they have proposed a big change. It is planned to move the application menu within its own window, as it works on all current interfaces.

"This would be very easy to implement, it would even be very good with third-party applications such as Firefox or Chromium, which already use this type of menu,”Mention the developers in the proposal.

The application menu is currently located next to the "Activities”In the bar above. The name of the active application is displayed in addition to the icon.

The application menu provides shortcuts to global actions such as exit, help, preferences or information, this affects the application in question and not only the active window, for example, if the Nautilus file browser has several windows open and is modified behavior through options, all windows will undergo these changes.

With the proposed change, a "hamburger menu" is added with secondary windows offering different options and settings in a "three-point menu" as we see in the following image:

For applications like Nautilus, which do not have child windows, window and global settings will be displayed in the same menu using a horizontal separator.

The GNOME development team mentions that there are many problems with the current application menu, they even say that there are users who spend months thinking that there are no general preferences of the application because they don't find the option.

GNOME 3.30, planned for September, will arrive without this change to give developers time to adapt their applications, although the interface will already have support for these types of menus. The change will be seen in GNOME 3.32, planned for March 2019, where the developers will modify the application menu completely.
