GNOME 40.7, a "boring" update to fix bugs

GNOME 40.7

we missed the sixth point update (here the fifth), but the next one is already here. The project behind the most used desktop in the Linux world launched GNOME 40.7, which is the seventh maintenance update for the version of GNOME that was released in March of last year. Currently available in distributions like Ubuntu 21.10, it's not a new release with new features, but it does include fixes to make everything run smoother and more reliable.

In the words of its own developers, «GNOME 40.7 is designed to be a boring bugfix update […], so it should be safe to upgrade from earlier versions of GNOME 40«. Between the corrections, we can mention some such as the following.

Some of the fixes made in GNOME 40.7

  • Improved window tracking in GNOME Shell.
  • Minimize and unminimize animations have been modified.
  • Simplified slider fade shading to work on older hardware.
  • Mapping improvements on Wacom tablets
  • Support for ABGR and XBGR formats in the DMA-BUF subsystem.
  • GNOME Shell has been improved so that the screen no longer wakes up in Do Not Disturb mode.
  • Mutter improvements for non-redirected Xwayland windows that have not been updated.
  • Several extensions have been updated.
  • Some applications updated to the "new" version, in quotes, because GNOME 41 already exists.
  • Improvements in Wayland.
  • How could it be otherwise, it has been used to correct all kinds of bugs, unexpected closures (crashes), memory leaks, improved support for sessions that are not systemd and translations.

GNOME 40.7, or more specifically its source code, available en this link. Apps that have been numbered 40.7 as the latest version will appear on Flathub soon. From here, say that, unless it is absolutely necessary, it is best to wait for our Linux distribution to add the new packages to its official repositories.
