arc menu

Lovers of free software in general and desktops in particular are in luck. Just announced the immediate availability of the Gnome 3.26 desktop. This new version of Gnome, which is called "Manchester", has brought quite striking news.

Gnome 3.26 comes to celebrate the XNUMXth anniversary of this long-standing desk, something that happened on August 15. To celebrate, it comes with improvements to the Flatpak packaging system, emoji typing support and also a new settings panel, greatly simplifying its operation.

Also, the Gnome Shell has been improved, which now has a much more powerful search engine than before. The aesthetics of the desktop have also been greatly improved, softening the animations and creating a more friendly and transparent aesthetic.

In addition, the zoom control in the photo editor has been improved, improved upscaling to high definition resolutions, the input and output process monitor has been greatly improved and the tool for creating ISO images has also been improved.

Finally, we have a much better map app than before, with an improved aerial view. As for the small improvements, we have updated some applications, improvement in the experience with JavaScript and finally correcting the bugs detected in previous versions.

Gnome 3.26 certainly a major update, especially since it will be the one that marks the return of Ubuntu to Gnome. During these last years, Ubuntu used Unity as the main desktop, but due to the failure of this desktop, Gnome has once again become the default desktop of the Canonical operating system, with Gnome 3.26 being the one that will have the honor of being the first of this new it was in ubuntu 17.10.

In addition, this desktop will be added to the repositories of your favorite distributionss, such as Arch Linux. In addition, users of previous versions will be able to upgrade without any problem.

I think it is Gnome, but modified with extensions. Anyway, the news of the release of Gnome 3.26 is good, so look forward to it.

Where can I download it to test it?

I think you can download it in live mode to test it, but although it has already been officially released, however Ubuntu users will be able to enjoy it in Ubuntu 17.10 version, the first to receive it are Fedora users.

    Hello:
Well, I think opensuse tumbleweed already has it, before a tumbleweed image came out with the gnome -next repository but I think the last image already incorporates it.
    Greetings.

    Hello:
I confirm that opensuse tumbleweed already has gnome 3.26 so you can download it from the tumbleweed portal.
This is a rolling release distribution that works with rpm packages and zypper package manager.
    Greetings.

I am a Fedora user, and although I had a hard time adapting to Gnome 3 when I left, I was finally able to get hold of it. The problem is that it consumes a lot of resources (depending on the services we use) but in a standard installation it consumes me 1 GB just installed, with activated online accounts, WIFI and Bluetooth. I have decided to use the Fedora spin with Cinnamon, and am delighted with this environment. And it just doesn't even take up 7 GB of memory. I will try this new version of Gnome to see if they have lightened the resources a bit, and see what is new. Greetings.

It was about time Ubuntu returned to Gnome, it was the reason why I abandoned the distribution in the first place.

By the way, I've been using the desktop in Arch for weeks now and I don't know if there is still a tray where the background tasks are or if the update was installed incorrectly. Can anyone tell me if it disappeared or changed?
