GNOME 3.40 promises to improve battery consumption management with a new setting with modes such as saving or higher performance

Battery management modes in GNOME 3.40

If you have tried different operating systems on the same computer, you have probably noticed something: the battery does not last the same depending on which one we use. Personally, my laptops have only endured as long as they should with Windows, in Ubuntu they have endured somewhat less and in Kubuntu and its Plasma the autonomy is much worse. This is, in part, for all that each of the options offers. As for Ubuntu, and other systems using the same graphical environment, this will change with the release of GNOME 3.40.

The news of the new project took place last Thursday, September 10, but it was not until a few minutes ago that we found out that an adjustment is being worked on that will be integrated into the Energy section of the System Configuration and that will allow us to configure different modes to prioritize performance, balanced usage, or to extend battery life of our laptop.

GNOME 3.40 has not yet started development, but some news is already known

As we read in the note posted about this daemon, not all teams will be able to enjoy "Performance Mode", because this is something that will depend on the systems or drivers they use. The other two, the Balanced and Savings modes, will reach any computer that can install GNOME 3.40, an environment that will be used by future versions of Fedora and Ubuntu, among many others.

In addition to battery management modes, the daemon will also include actions to change some loading behaviorsFor example, fast charging can be disabled for some USB devices when the power saving mode is activated.

Currently, GNOME 3.40 has not yet started development, so the exact date of its release is not known either. At the moment, the project Is developing GNOME 3.38, version of the desktop that will use operating systems like Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla.
