GIMP 2.10.14 arrives with improvements and bug fixes

The release of the new version of the popular graphics editor GIMP 2.10.14 was presented, which continued to refine the functionality and increase the stability of the 2.10 branch. In addition to fixing bugs in GIMP 2.10.14, Several improvements are presented to the editor.

Within these, we can find that it was added the ability to view and edit content outside of the canvas. In the «View» menu, a new "Show all" mode is proposed, that when activated, all pixels outside the canvas become visible. The area outside the canvas is perceived as transparent by default, but in the settings you can set the fill color to a normal color, similar to the fill on the canvas.

You can also enable the marking of the edges of the canvas with a dashed red line. Outside of the canvas, operations including color determination, restoration, fill, and transformation are also available.

For example, you can crop the image to capture an area outside the canvas or use a mask from the outside of the image to restore the image to the canvas. Support is expected to highlight off-canvas areas in one of the next issues.

In GIMP 2.10.14 a new mode in transformation tools, what Allows you to automatically stretch the canvas if the result of the transformation does not fit within its current borders.

For example, if during the rotation of the selected area, the angle goes beyond the edge of the current canvas, then the edge of the canvas will shift. To activate the mode, you can select "Adjust Crop" in the tool settings panel or via the "Image> Transform> Arbitrary Rotation" menu.

Filters can now go beyond limits of the layer if the result of your application does not fit on the original layer. For example, the shadow created by the Shadow filter is now not clipped to the edge of the layer, but instead automatically increases the size of the layer. You can restore the previous behavior via the "Clipping" setting in the dialog with filter parameters.

Another novelty that stands out in GIMP 2.10.14 is el Improved support for HEIF, TIFF and PDF formats. For HEIF images, when built with libheif 1.4.0+, ICC color profiles are supported for loading and exporting. When importing TIFF images, you can now choose a method to process undefined channels. When exporting PDF, you organize the export of text layers within layer groups.

On the other hand I also knowe highlights in the ad that the loading of corrupted XCF files was improved in this new edition of GIMP 2.10.14. Since if an error is detected in one layer or channel, the load now does not stop immediately, but attempts are made to load data from other layers and channels.

Besides that the work of GIMP 2.10.14 was improved for the macOS platform. Added support for macOS 10.15 "Catalina". Nightly build training for Windows has been added to the continuous integration system.

Between the future plans, intention is observed in the coming months to release a trial version of GIMP 2.99.2, that will be formed in preparationn for the future version of GIMP 3, notable for a significant cleanup of the code base and the transition to GTK3 +.
