Getting books and news sources with Caliber

Caliber Book Finder

Caliber's book browser tells us where we can get a book, its price and if it has copy protection.

Caliber is one of those open source programs that outperforms its paid competitors. yese is an electronic book collection manager that also includes an editor and a reader as separate programs With versions for Windows and Mac, you can also find it in the repositories of the main Linux distributions and in the Flatpak store.

In this post we continue reviewing some more Caliber options from its main menu. Remember that at the end of the post are the links to the first articles of the series

Accessing books from Caliber

Show

Used to open the selected book. Depending on the format and the configuration, it will open it with the e-book viewer that is part of the suite or with the application default by the operating system. In case we have stored a book in more than one format, we can choose which one to open.

Regardless of what we have set in the configuration we can open the book with the viewer.  Other options are to open a random book from the collection or explore the annotations that we have made with the reader tool.

Getting books and news sources

Get books

Caliber integrates a search engine that allows us to try to find books among the catalog of commercial and public domain sites, twhether or not they deceive copy protection. Although Caliber is not involved in the transactions of the payment books, it receives referral payments from some of them. The search engine also indicates if the book has copy protection and the price.

get news

An interesting option is get news which allows us to download content from different websites and transform it into an electronic book to read on a device. Caliber comes with a number of pre-programmed news sites and we can add our own sources. The created book is added to our library. The Add News menu has three options:

  • Schedule news download: We can set the schedule individually for each source. On the left we have the sources classified by language, within the language by country and within the country by name of the source. Those created by us are under the heading Custom. It is possible to set days of the week, days of the month or interval of days between downloads. Also order him to delete the old news. It is possible to turn the title into a label and indicate how many copies to keep. It is also possible to download on the spot.
  • Add or modify a custom news feed: The title is pretty descriptive, but I'll expand a bit more later.
  • Download all scheduled news sources: Download all news sources that you have scheduled for download.

Add a custom news feed

There is an easy way and a hard way to add the news feed. The easy way is to put a link to the RSS feed. Suppose you want to do it with Linux Adictos. The steps are the following:

  1. In the Get news dropdown menu, click Add or modify a custom news source.
  2. Click on New formula.
  3. In Title of the formula put, Linux Adictos.
  4. Put the amount you want in Oldest article.
  5. do what you want with Item number per channel.
  6. In channel title put Linux Adictos.
  7. in url https://www.linuxadictos.com/feed
  8. Press on Add channel and in Save.
  9. Close the window.

To create the book for the first time:

  1. Press on Schedule news download.
  2. Press on Personalized.
  3. Press on Linux Addicts.
  4. Press on download now. When the pop-up menu alerts you, click on OK.
  5. Hover over the title Linux Adictos in the Caliber list and in Show. This will open the reader.

In case the method of adding the word feed to the link doesn't work, you can create what the developers call a formula. This is a set of instructions that tells caliber how to turn the website into an eBook. But that exceeds the purposes of this article, so I refer you to the program's manual.
