fwupd

fwupd It is a little known open source project, but quite important, since it serves to update the Linux firmware automatically, safely, and reliably. This project has now been updated to version 1.7, and has important hidden improvements, as well as new features for this tool.

fwupd 1.7 add now support for Logitech signature devices, which support the unified battery feature, implements an interactive request to reboot some Logitech DFU devices, adds support for more StarBook laptops and PixArt devices with Coreboot, and introduces support for installing remote LVFS.

This version of fwupd also comes with FuCfuPayload and with FuCfuOffer for future use, ability to automatically create Redfish user accounts using IPMI, support for adding GUIDs to each HSI security attribute, as well as adding ability to convert security attributes to JSON and write them to a database.

And that's not all, the ability to convert the device test script into a fwupdmgr subcommand is also introduced, improve support for numerous Synaptics CAPE devices, it adds support for Elan fingerprint readers, support for new Logitech Bolt radio peripherals, receivers and hardware, and other Union Point SPI hardware. And if you thought that's it, there are also notable changes in fwupd to allow the use of interrupt transfers for HID devices, and a long etc.

fwupd 1.7 also has code changes to correct some mistakes that were in previous versions and that affected the stability and reliability of this software. For example, those that affected the flashing of the Dell database, or the error with the Thunderbolt host controller, as well as other problems.

If you would like to try it now and compile it yourself, you can download the source code from GitHub and start testing what's new in v1.7. If you are not a compiler, you will still have to wait a while for the latest stable version to reach the repos of your favorite GNU / Linux distribution. At the moment there are only the previous versions ...
