Free software to accompany breakfast

Since the people of Actualidad Blog decided to establish a zero tolerance policy towards the use of Artificial Intelligence tools, I have no choice but to create content the old-fashioned way. Copy content from OMG! Ub… I mean, to apply creativity techniques to produce useful and original posts. From one of my individual brainstorming sessions came the memory of an old advertisement and, of the same this post about free software to accompany breakfast.

In the time that I have been in Linux Adictos I have written Lots of program lists and there's always a new way to do them. That shows the variety of free and open source software

Free software to accompany breakfast

Breakfast

I am old enough to remember not only the time when newspapers were the main source of news (Radios, at least the Argentine ones, based almost all their content on them) but also when they were printed in black and white (Or salmon and black those specializing in economics)

Even today, when the Internet has blurred the boundaries between different media, breakfast usually includes a quick visit through the newspaper portals.

Brave

The traditional media adapted to the Internet late and badly. Adapting to the Internet is not the same as having a website, it is about understanding the new consumption habits generated from it and finding ways to make them profitable.  The response of newspapers and other news portals was to fill them with advertising and limit the number of articles that could be accessed for free.. Even if it is not their fault, but the politicians, we must not forget the annoying cookie consent banners either.

El Brave browser It is based on Google Chrome, but tIt has some very interesting own tools that make reading news portals easier.

The media know that most readers will choose to use an ad blocker and take countermeasures to prevent the use of the most popular ones. As Brave's own technology, and the browser is not so massive, they hardly bother to detect and block it.

Another method of forcing the user to subscribe is to limit free access by determining, through the use of cookies, how many times it was accessed from a computer. brave It removes almost all forms of tracking right out of the box, including the obnoxious consent banners that are also used for tracking.

As if that were not enough, you can opt for two privacy modes: The traditional one that does not save data and another based on the Tor network that sends the traffic through a network of different computers throughout the world.

RSS Guard

There is a concept that has become fashionable among productivity specialists called "Cognitive Bandwidth". Basically it is that our brain has a limit to the amount of information it can incorporate per day and, the more irrelevant data enters, the there is less space for what is important. Some go as far as advising against postponing reading news and social media.

There is a middle path that is to use an RSS aggregator.

RSS is the acronym in English to indicate that it is about uA very easy system to distribute content. It is based on the XML format and allows users to receive the content that interests them, in an updated way., without having to enter each Internet portal one by one.

RSS Guard is A program what can we install from FlatHub on all Linux distributions. Some of its functions are:

  • Format support ATOM, JSON (1X) and RSS (Up to 2x)
  • Compatible with web news aggregators like Feedly, Gmail, NextCloud News, Tiny Tiny RSS and those based on the Google Reader API.

kteatime

Although coffee (or mate if you are in the south of the Southern Cone and in the east of Chile) is usually the typical breakfast drink, there are those who prefer a good tea. As the name implies, kteatime is a timer to heat the tea water to the right temperature. You just have to select the type, add the water, start the timer and that's it.

It is in the repositories of KDE-based distributions and in the snap store.
