Free software for computer fixes

Continuing with the lists I started in the previous article, I'm going to make a free software for computer fixes. I recently started a PC repair course and found that it is completely windows centric and encourages the use of proprietary tools. Hence, I decided to investigate free alternatives.

By free software for computer fixes I mean to applications that collect information about hardware, detect problems, and format and clone drives.

Free software for computer fixes

Clonezilla

It's an htool thought for create disk images and clone partitions and entire disks. It would be the equivalent of Norton Ghost or True Image. It comes in three versions, one live for individual teams and two server versions for working with multiple teams simultaneously.

To save working time, Clonezilla only clones the used blocks of the hard drive.

  • Support for different file systems from GNU/Linux, MS windows, Mac OS (Intel), FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Minix, VMWare ESX and Chrome OS/Chromium OS.
  • Support for LVM2 and LUKS.
  • Allows bootloader reinstallation.
  • Support for BIOS and UEFI and for MBR and GPT partitions.

y-you

The name of this program is short for Stress Terminal UI. This tool for Linux is used from the terminal so it does not require a graphical server. It is used to subject the computer to heavy work and thus monitor its statistics. Computers can be remotely monitored via SSH.

The program tracks CPU temperature/utilization/frequency/power and displays it graphically on the terminal.

Rescatux

This Linux distribution derived from Debian inIt includes several tools designed to solve problems with Windows and Linux. From its assistant we can reset the passwords of the operating system, restore the boot manager and check the file system.

Also included are tools to repair hard drives and recover deleted files.

Phoronix Test Suite

This suite was created to collect different information about the computer and compare it with other computers. Testing ranges from battery power consumption monitoring for mobile devices to multi-threaded ray tracing benchmarks. Scans cover CPU, graphics, system memory, disk storage, and motherboard components. We have more than 450 test profiles and more than 100 test suites. If this is not enough, new tests can be quickly added.

Trinity Rescue Kit

this set, Although it is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License, it includes proprietary software and in some cases requires the payment of a license. It only works for Windows and maybe that's why it has no less than 5 antiviruses; Clam AV, F-Prot, BitDefender, Vexira and Avast.

Other features are:

  • Reset passwords using Winpass.
  • Text based menu.
  • Support for writing to ntfs partitions.
  • Utility for removing unnecessary files.
  • Backup automation.
  • File copy recovery utilities.

Snappy Driver Installer Origin

Application portable for windows that allows us to install and update device drivers even offline. The program works with a driver matching algorithm and can be used from a pen drive. It allows the automation of the entire procedure and is compatible with all versions of Windows starting with XP.

Rufus

Is an application for creating bootable media on thumb drives and memory cards. It works with both Linux and Windows distribution images.

Open Hardware Monitor

This program monitors temperature sensors, fan speeds, voltages, load and clock speed of a computer. The software can be used with most hardware monitoring chips found on today's motherboards. CPU temperature monitoring is done by reading the core temperature sensors of Intel and AMD processors. The sensors of the ATI and Nvidia video cards are also shown, as well as the temperature of the hard disk.

The application is compatible with Linux and the latest versions of Windows.

Ventoy was missing, to make multiboot pendrives, unlike Rufus, it can also be installed on Linux.
