Firefox prepares a new new tab page: wallpapers and weather widget

Firefox Nightly

Firefox prepare visual changes. There are users who have asked for it, and Mozilla is responding. Among what is being cooked, at least two new features that will be obvious, both in what is shown when opening a new tab: we can choose wallpapers to achieve something like the header capture, and it will also be possible to activate a weather widget, something that at least in my case I have not been able to verify.

Both options can be tested from the page about: config of Firefox, also known as the advanced settings. In order to see the wallpapers, you must access said configuration, search browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.newtabWallpapers.enabled and change it to "true". Once done, it does not require a restart, we open a new tab, something we can do with Ctrl+T or by clicking on the plus symbol and that would be it.

Firefox prepares visual tweaks

By default nothing is seen, but when we click on the gear wheel we will see something like the following:

Selection of wallpapers for new tab

At the top of the options there is various wallpapers to choose. There are currently six options, but custom options cannot be added. Maybe in the future.

The weather widget is what I haven't been able to test. In this link from the Mozilla blog explain that you have to go to the advanced configuration and activate both browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showWeather as browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.system.showWeather. When I did it, I first saw a notice in the upper left that the weather was currently not available, but my browser was updated and now I don't even see that message. What they are preparing looks like this:

Firefox Time Widget

Until they release all this in a stable version we will not be able to know exactly what the new tabs will look like, but it is expected that it will not come close to showing something as loaded as what we see in Microsoft Edge.

Currently, Firefox 126 is the most up-to-date stable version, and all of these changes are being tested in Firefox 128.
