The color scheme changes by browser forces and does not require site support, allowing a dark theme to be used on sites available only in light colors and a light theme on dark sites.

To change the representation of colors in the preferences (about: preferences) in the section «General / Language and appearance», a new section «Colors» has been proposed, where you can enable redefinition of colors in relation to the operating system color scheme or assign colors manually.

Another change that is presented in this new version of Firefox 96 is the noise reduction significantly improved automatic audio gain control, as well as slightly improved echo cancellation.

Also a stricter restriction has been applied on the transfer of cookies between sites, that prohibits the processing of third-party cookies set when accessing sites other than the domain of the current page. These cookies are used to track user movements between sites in the code of advertising networks, social media widgets, and web analytics systems.

The cookie policy is controlled by the same site attribute in the Cookie Policy heading, which is now set to "Same-Site = Lax" by default, which restricts the sending of cookies for cross-site sub-requests, such as requesting an image or download content through an iframe from another site, which also provides protection against CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) attacks.

Other changes that are included are:

  • Fixed issues with decreased video quality on some sites and resetting of the SSRC (sync source identifier) header when watching a video.
  • We also fixed an issue with reduced resolution when sharing a screen via WebRTC.
  • On macOS, following links in Gmail now opens them in a new tab, just like on other platforms. Due to unresolved issues, macOS does not support unpinning videos in full screen mode.
  • To simplify customization of dark theme styles, a new CSS property color scheme has been added, which allows you to determine in which color schemes an element can be displayed correctly.
  • Added hwb () CSS function that can be specified instead of color values to define colors based on HWB color model (hue, whiteness, blackness).
  • Load on the main thread of execution has been significantly reduced.
