Firefox 66.0.4 arrives to fix the problem with add-ons

Recientemente Mozilla developers have released the corrective edits full-featured Firefox 66.0.4 and 60.6.2 ESR, which propose a solution to replace an expired intermediate certificate and restore disabled add-ins.

As as we commented in a previous article, Firefox users noticed a problem with your browsers: they couldn't install extensions and their existing plugins were no longer working.

In a blog post, Mozilla said that it identified the problem and configured a patch for users:

«Last Friday, May 3, we learned of a problem with Firefox that prevented the launch or installation of new add-on modules. We apologize for the inconvenience to Firefox users.

“Our team identified the issue and implemented a patch for all Firefox Desktop users on the Release, Beta, and Nightly channels. The solution will be applied automatically in the background in the next few hours.

You don't need to take active steps to get the plugins working again. In particular, do not remove or reinstall any plugins to try to solve the problem. Deleting a plug-in removes all data associated with it, unlike deactivation and reactivation.

Firefox still does not fix the problems completely

Even though this new release fixes the certificate issue, there are still several unresolved side effects:

Some Plugins, such as Epubreader, are not restored to about: add-ins after the certificate has been updated or remains in an unsupported state.

The problem concerns to plugins without an identifier in manifest.json file that were removed in the event of a digital signature verification error.

So it is recommended to reinstall such additions (the data will be restored as it remains in the directory with the profile).

There is a loss of data and settings in additions that use container functionality context, for example, in additions to Multi-Account Containers and Facebook Container.

Users are advised to reconfigure these plugins in about: addons.

Themes are not restored. Users are advised to re-enable them in the plugin manager.

The default settings for the home page and search engines are reset to the default values. User needs to reconfigure home page and search engine.

For older versions (Firefox 56.0.2 and earlier) that do not include normandy (a component to support research, conduct a survey, and unplanned activation of new features), enthusiasts suggested solving the problem by extracting the certificate from the XPI file with the solution.

The extracted certificate must be written in a pem file and import this file through the dialog box «Options - Privacy and Security - Certifcates - View Certifcates - Authorities - Import».

In addition, we can observe the discussion about dependency on Tor browser on the Mozilla infrastructure.

Since for Tor browser users have been affected with supplied NoScript and HTTPS-Everywhere plugins, providing an additional level of protection.

To restore, just configure the settings xpinstall.signatures.required = false en about:config, but the fact of reliance on third-party instances of Tor browser users raises questions, the actions of which can disable additional levels of anonymity.
