Firefox 114 continues to improve DNS over HTTPS and WebTransport is enabled by default

Firefox 114

Today, June 6, the launch of Firefox 114. It is already available, but to download it you have to go to Mozilla's FTP; It still does not appear on its official website. They have not updated the news page either, but there is a section on their GitHub where everything has been clearly visible for a long time. This way we can already write the article about the new release, insisting that it will be official within 3-5 hours.

Firefox 114 is an update that doesn't seem too exciting, but it does include some interesting new features. For example, until now they could only use FIDO2 Windows users, but now we can also use them for macOS, Linux... and Windows, but 7 in this case. This technology is what makes possible the use of PassKeys, although at the moment it is something so little extended that I do not recommend its use due to what may happen.

What's new in Firefox 114

  • Added a UI to manage the DNS over HTTPS exception list.
  • Favorites can now be searched from the bookmarks menu. This menu is accessible by adding the “Bookmarks Menu” button to the toolbar.
  • Ability to restrict searches to local browsing history by selecting “history search” from the history, library and apps menu buttons.
  • macOS users can now capture video from their cameras in all supported native resolutions. This activates resolutions higher than 1280×720.
  • It is now possible to reorder the extensions listed in the extensions panel.
  • MacOS, Linux, and Windows 7 users can use FIDO2/WebAuthn authenticators via USB. Some advanced features, such as passwordless logins, require a pin.
  • Recommended Pocket content is now also available in France, Italy and Spain.
  • The DNS over HTTPS settings are now part of the "Privacy and security" section of the settings, and allow you to choose between all supported modes.
  • In the DOM (Document Object Model that in a browser usually matches the HTML structure of the document and can be seen from the developer tools) support for ES modules in DedicatedWorker and SharedWorker has been added.
  • WebTransport is now enabled by default. This enables multiple use cases that are difficult or impossible to handle without it, especially for live streaming gaming. It covers cases that are problematic for alternative mechanisms, such as WebSockets. It is built on top of HTTP3 (HTTP2 support will come later).
  • In CSS, the "infinity" and "NaN" constants are supported within the calc() function.
  • The Copy as cURL function, available in the networks panel, has been improved. Now supports the argument –compressed.
  • The accessibility inspector has been improved to accurately recognize all ARIA roles such as "banner", "main", "navigation" and "contentinfo". This enhancement is particularly beneficial for web developers working with ARIA roles to improve web accessibility.
  • Firefox now supports the level 4 CSS cascade syntax "supports()" for "@import" rules. This allows the importation of other style sheets based on support-dependency. Also, the inspector panel can accurately display the condition on top of the imported rule.
  • Information about enterprise-specific bug fixes and policy updates can now be found in the Firefox for Enterprise 114 Release Notes.
  • Various security fixes.

All of the above list will appear in the release notes of Firefox 114 which currently appears as being prepared. As we mentioned above, will update within 3-5 hours, at which time the launch will become official. For those who want to install or try it now, you can go to this link, scroll until you find 114.0 (nothing else; the other options are preview builds), then choose your platform, language, and download the installer, or in the case of Linux the binaries.

The versions from the official repositories will appear a little later, and they will also appear in Snapcraft y Flatub. For Ubuntu users who prefer something non-snap, we have relevant information on our sister blog Ubunlog, here.
