Content filters and parental control for GNU / Linux distributions

Baby using tablet

There are many GNU / Linux distributions designed For the smallest of the house, also for educational purposes. We have already analyzed and talked about them on many occasions, but few times we have written about other necessary software when talking about children and that is parental control and content filters so that they do not access sites that they should not access. A good way to protect children from inappropriate content would be through a proxy with the help of projects as famous as Squid or directly using iptables to prevent access to certain domains.

But there are also programs that can make our work a little easier and that are entirely intended to filter this type of content or act as parental control for our favorite distro, thus leaving it safe so that our children can use technology without any unnecessary risk. Well, these control tools and content filtering will be the subject of this article:

  • DansGuardian- This is a powerful open source content filter that works on all or almost all Linux distributions. It requires a configuration from the command line, but it is quite powerful although it is complex if we are beginners.
  • Parental Control: Family Friendly Filter: It is not a program itself, but an extension for the Mozilla Firefox browser that we can easily download and install. The good thing is its simplicity, but we must know that if the child uses another browser, it will not be blocking web content.
  • Blocksi Web Filter: is another extension for a web browser, but in this case for Google Chrome. Filter inappropriate web content as well as YouTube. You can even limit the hours of use so that the child does not exceed a limit in front of the screen.

Of course these are not the only options available, but they are quite interesting ...
