FFmpeg 5.0 now available with new encoders/decoders, among other news

ffmpeg 5.0

There are probably Linux users who don't know what this FFmpeg thing is. Well, it is a collection of free software that will allow us to carry out tasks such as recording, editing or converting multimedia files, and it is the heart of many applications with a user interface (GUI). By default it works with commands, but it is a very useful tool especially, although not exclusively, among Linux users. That's why news like the launch of ffmpeg 5.0 have some importance among Linux Adictos.

The codename of FFmpeg 5.0 is lorentz, and I find it interesting to mention a couple of examples that allow us to make the software for the most clueless. If we record our desktop screen with SimpleScreenRecorder and leave the output file in its default format, it will record a video in MKV. If we want to send it by Telegram and see it from the same app, we can open a terminal, write ffmpeg -i video-name.mkv output-name.mp4, wait a few seconds and send the MP4. It also allows us to join videos, as we explained just over a month ago in this article.

Some new features of FFmpeg 5.0

FFmpeg 5.0 has arrived about nine months after v4.4, and brings news such as:

  • New encoders and decoders, such as ADPCM IMA Westwook, ADPCM IMA Acorn Replay, Apple Graphics, MSN Siren, and more.
  • New muxers and demuxers have been included, including AV1 Low, Argonaut, Games CVG, Westwood AUD, and IMF, the latter being experimental.
  • Support for the Concatf protocol.
  • Support for splitting swscale threads.
  • Hardware acceleration VideoToolbox VP9 and ProRes.
  • Longarch support.
  • RTP packer to uncompress video.
  • New filters and audio tools.
  • New filters and video tools.
  • Complete list of changes to this link.

Although is now available on GitHub, on the main page of FFmpeg FFmpeg 5.0 is not yet listed, so we can say that the release has occurred, but it is not 100% official (not 100%). It can be downloaded from project download page, but, if you are not in a hurry, perhaps it is best to wait for the new packages to be added to the official repositories of our Linux distribution.
