Fedora Mobility is not dead and is preparing a mobile version of Fedora

After ten years of inactivity, ehe Fedora Mobility team is back on track to develop an official edition of the Fedora mobile distribution, as such the resurgence of the Fedora Mobility development version project it's thanks to the PinePhone, Ya que the developers saw an opportunity to continue the project focusing on the design of the system to be installed on the PinePhone smartphone developed by the Pine64 community.

Currently, a set of mobile packages has been added to the Fedora 33 repository (rawhide), which includes a custom touch-controlled Phosh shell.

Let's remember that the hardware PinePhone is designed to use replaceable components and most of the modules are not soldered, but connected by detachable cables, allowing for example to replace the camera offered by default with a better one.

The device is built on a quad-core ARM Allwinner A64 SoC with Mali 400 MP2 GPU, equipped with 2 or 3 GB of RAM, 5,95-inch screen (1440 × 720 IPS), Micro SD (with support for charging from a SD card), 16 or 32 GB eMMC (internal), a USB-C port with USB Host and a combo video output for connecting a monitor, 3,5 mm mini jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0 (A2DP), GPS, GPS-A, GLONASS, two cameras (2 and 5 Mpx), removable 3000 mAh battery, hardware switchable components with LTE / GNSS, WiFi, microphone and speakers.

About Fedora Mobility

Among the few details that have been released about Fedora Mobility, it is mentioned that the touch desktop environment will be phosh. The Phosh shell was developed by Purism for the Librem 5 smartphone, it uses the Phoc composite server that runs on Wayland and is based on GNOME technologies (GTK, GSettings, DBus).

In addition to that you are already working on a compatible touch screen keyboard, squeekboard.

The build also points out the possibility of using the KDE Plasma Mobile environment, but packages with it are not yet included in the Fedora repository.

Among the applications and components offered in the mobile version of Fedora, we can find some of those that are already in Librem 5 and others in which we will work to include them, of which the following stand out:

  • ophone: battery for dial-up.
  • Chatty: is a messenger based on libpurple.
  • coals: XMPP plugin for libpurple.
  • pidgin: is a modified version of the pidgin instant messaging program, of which the libpurple library for chatty is used.
  • purple-mm-sms: libpurple plugin to work with SMS, integrated with ModemManager.
  • purple-matrix: is a Matrix network plugin for libpurple.
  • purple-telegram: Telegram plugin for libpurple.
  • Calls: an interface for dialing and receiving calls.
  • feedbackd: Integrated background process with Phosh for physical feedback (vibration, LEDs, beeps).
  • rtl8723cs-firmware: firmware for the Bluetooth chip used in the PinePhone.
  • sketchboard: It is a Wayland compatible on-screen keyboard.
  • pinephone-helpers: scripts to initialize the modem and change audio streams when making a phone call.
  • gnome-terminal it is a terminal emulator.
  • gnome-contacts: address book.
