Vircadia: a strange social network that you should know

vircadia, stick with this name as there is likely to be a lot of talk from now on. The truth is that it is nothing extremely new, but it mixes some things under the same very interesting open source project. Behind the name is a new free social network.

You surely remember the famous Second Life social video game that caused a furor in the past. Well, Vircadia was created from a successor of this one that turned out to be unsuccessful and that was also free and open source. Originally known as the Athena Project, it has now been rebranded under this other, more commercial name, and has started making ads to get attention.

It aims to be a revolutionary social network that will not be based on a simple format of images, videos or text like conventional social networks. It's about a 3D virtual space to share with other members, as long as your hardware supports virtual reality and has a Linux, macOS, Windows or Android operating system.

This space will allow people to create a own avatar, with their own worlds and much more. The idea has its appeal and it sounds pretty good, although the current state of the project is still Beta, so it is in a fairly early version.

Nevertheless it is functional and ready to use being stable enough. However, it needs a lot of improvements and a lot of work ahead of it. In addition, its developers are concerned that Linux support is adequate, since it is the main system that some of its developers use.

If you wonder what can be done in these virtual worlds, the truth is that you can socialize with friends using your avatar and directing him in this world, play games, watch movies, it could even be used for more serious things like attend meetings of work. And the best thing is that it is not limited, and can be modified to shape it to your liking ...

A similar idea was seen in the movie "Ready Player One", with an online "universe" with access from the real one. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes very, very similar.
This escape from reality that a large part of humanity wants comes from very distant times (sports, hobbies, drinks, drugs, vocations, etc.), and this software - like many others today - only facilitates that “Exit”, using our time and privacy as a bargaining chip, which - as we all know - eventually becomes money as well (right, facebook / tiktok / twitter / instagram /…?).
Although I like technology and its possibilities, I still love my privacy and time, so I will try to escape in another way, total options there are many. But I don't know, maybe something will lead me to finally enter (being old perhaps), and it will happen as with fb: my time will no longer be mine.
