Ethan Lee, the developer responsible for the re-implementation of XNA FNA along with 50 other video game ports for Linux and macOS has announced something important. And it is that future macOS ports will cease. From now on it will focus on GNU / Linux, which is always great news for all Linux gamers.
If you still don't know who Ethan Lee is, you probably know some of his works. And surely you liked more than some game carried by him, or with technology created or maintained by them. For example, I'm sure Transistor, Rogue Legacy, Streets of Rage 4, Superliminal, FEZ, Owlboy, Salt and Sanctuary, etc.
Now, as Ethan Lee himself has written on his personal page of IcculusFinger: «I've put it off as long as I could, but after looking at Apple's track record against my infrastructure for Mac support, it seems that 2021 is the year that I have to say goodbye to Mac as a primary goal.«. So, it seems that he has been delaying his forays with Apple until the current direction of the Cupertino company has caused him to lose all interest for him.
The good news for Linux fans is that Ethan Lee is now going to dump the penguin platform: «The new juices, however, will be primarily for Linux (and Windows, if applicable). ». Despite that, the existing ports have not been neglected, since Lee has updated more than 30 with the latest, both for macOS and Linux, so you should check that all of them will continue to work without problems in the future.
Also, of all the titles, projects, and this welcome news, it seems that in some discussions and mailing lists, the developers they are not very happy with the macOS platform. For example, with MESA, there was a fairly descriptive comment on how quickly the open source community was responding to provide solutions and how Apple was doing it: «reporting bugs to Apple when you're not rich is like pulling your teeth out with boxing gloves«.
Ultimately, hopefully Ethan Lee will also have many more Linux ports planned for 2021 and beyond.
