Endless OS 3.8 has already been released and comes with GNOME 3.36, Kernel 5.4 and more

The new version of Endless OS 3.8 has already been released and arrives with updates for desktop environment, Kernel and it also comes with new images for use in virtual machines.

For those unaware of this distribution Linux, they should know that is intended to create an easy to use system where you can quickly find applications to your liking. The applications are distributed as separate packages in Flatpak format.

The distribution does not use traditional package managers, instead of which offers a minimally upgradeable base system atomically it works in read-only mode and is formed using OSTree tools (the system image is atomically updated from a Git-like storage). Fedora developers have recently been trying to replicate ideas identical to Endless OS as part of the Silverblue project to create an atomically updated version of Fedora Workstation.

Endless OS is one of the distributions that promote innovation among Linux systems customized. The work environment in Endless OS is based on the GNOME fork significantly redesigned. At the same time, Endless developers are actively involved in the development of bottom-up projects and share their experiences with them. For example, in the GTK + 3.22 release, Endless developers prepared about 9.8% of all changes and Endless Mobile, which oversees the project, is on the GNOME Foundation's monitoring board, along with FSF, Debian, Google, Linux Foundation, Red Hat, and SUSE.

In this new version of the system most of the changes introduced are focused on the update of the different components of the system, such as the desktop environment which was updated to GNOME 3.36 and with it many of the applications in the environment were also updated to this new version (mutter, gnome-settings-daemon, nautilus, etc), plus screensaver layout changed, user menu reorganized where it looked like a button was going into sleep mode, simplified navigation was introduced in the settings section, and more.

Also, in the initial setup stage, the ability to enable parental control system was added, which allows restricting user access to certain applications.

As well we can find the new versions of the Linux kernel 5.4, system environment updated to systemd 244, PulseAudio 13, Mesa 19.3.3, NVIDIA 440.64 driver, VirtualBox Guest Utils 6.1.4, GRUB 2.04, Chromium 80.0.3987.163 with new security fixes for the embedded web browser Endless, etc.

Another change that was introduced in this new version of Endless OS 3.8, is the imaging in OVF format for launch in virtual environments with VirtualBox or VMWare Player.

We are now producing ready-to-use images that can be imported directly into any virtual machine software that supports OVF files (eg VirtualBox or VMWare Player) and 64-bit virtual machines. These images will be available to download from the Test tab or install on your computer in the Downloads section of our website.

Finally, it is also mentioned that various hardware support bugs were fixed for this release, improving and expanding Endless OS hardware compatibility.

The size of The iso image of the Lite version is 2.7 GB so a 2GB USB is enough.
