Emulatrix, an emulator based on Libretro that allows you to play from the browser and without advertising with different emulators

Emulatrix, main screen

As a user who knew the classic consoles, and although I do not play much, I like to always have some emulators available. The one that I usually install is always MAME, although now that I have tested how well it works for me RetroArch I'm going to stick with the latter as it also allows me to emulate more consoles. RetroArch is from Libretro, and based on its code it exists Emulatrix, an emulator that we can use from our web browser.

Available from this link, Emulatrix is an emulator that at the time of writing allows us load SEGA ROMs, various Nintendo consoles, arcade games (MAME) and MS-DOS, and all this from the browser. It does not offer us the possibility of loading any example ROM, since this would be illegal, but it does allow us to load any that we have or get over the internet, with nuances.

Emulatrix, the best and the worst

Right now, it supports games of:

  • Sega Genesis and Mega Drive.
  • Nintendo.
  • Super nintendo.
  • GameBoy, also supporting Color and Advance.
  • SUCK ME.
  • DOSBox.

Personally, I miss the SEGA Master System 2, which is what I had, and in the little test that I have done I have not been able to make the MAME games work, since they usually come in ZIP and these files are recognized as MS-DOS. I also mention this because Emulatrix does not look inside ZIPs, that is, if we load a compressed Mega Drive ROM (.md), it will open the DOSBox emulator directly, but it will open the correct emulator if we unzip it first.

As for its operation, we have all the instructions on the main screen. Each console works with a keys that are indicated in the presentation image, from where they also tell us that we have to load the types of files that it supports. On the other hand, the emulator allows us to save and load the games, which is also an interesting function that we did not have on classic consoles.

And another thing to keep in mind: from what I have tried, and confirmed by searching the internet, it is a fact that in Firefox it doesn't work as well as in Chromium, where the sound works fine, not so in the fox browser (sounds more choppy). I also find it important to mention that, for example, in Sonic it is not easy to walk forward and roll on the go, which means that the controls are not very precise. In any case, with its lights and shadows, Emulatrix is an option that is worth taking into account, for example, to enjoy some games where we cannot install software for whatever reason.
