elementaryOS 7.0 begins development, now that Ubuntu 22.04 has been released and internal issues have been resolved

elementary OS 7.0

After resolving some internal problems that ended with Cassidy on Endless OS and Danielle as the sole owner of the project, it seems -and we hope- that everything is returning to normal. This is how her CEO begins her April 2022 updates article, just saying that these types of articles have returned and are operating as normal. It is also normal that they continue with the development of the current version of their operating system, but they are already preparing things to launch elementary OS 7.0.

As for v6.1, there have been updates like the settings now allow you to choose which super key (or META or Windows) open multitasking view, or increase/decrease IMAP refresh rate from online accounts settings. The window manager has received several fixes, including more precision when choosing the accent color in the window picker or better handling of window selection beyond the picker itself.

elementary OS 7.0 will be based on Ubuntu 22.04

On elementary OS 7.0, Danielle says:

Now that Ubuntu 22.04 has been released, we are ready to finish development of elementary OS 7 and release it. There are only a handful of things left to finish that you can follow on our OS 7 project board on GitHub. At this time there is no specific release date; as usual, we will be able to launch it when the pending tasks on the launch board have been completed. In other words, if you want the launch to come sooner, you can jump in and make that happen.

So they don't give a timeline for the release of the stable version, but they have revealed the codename of elementary OS 7.0, Horus, and that the differences from 6.1 will be modest. Even so, he continues, new functions are expected to arrive as the year progresses.

They have also anticipated they won't make the jump to wayland during this cycle because they want to make the change in elementary OS 8.0, when they have everything in better shape. There is still time for that, and in the coming weeks they will announce the launch of Horus.
