El may newsletter of the elementary operating system project looks like a carbon copy of the posted last month. Well, only part of it, where they mention that we're closer to the release of elementaryOS 7.0, but that the current goal is still to improve things from the stable version, that is, from elementary OS 6.1. Many of those enhancements are already available, such as the new version of GNOME Web that includes security, compatibility, and performance improvements.
Other software, such as the latest versions of the GNOME archiver or its viewer, are now also available as flatpak packages, the type of packages that the project led by Danielle Foré is betting heavily on. have also been included GNOME apps 42, so users of the current elementary OS 6.1 are well covered.
elementaryOS 7.0 completes its final touches
Thanks to the move to Flatpak, some apps will be able to receive updates almost indefinitely. This month, OS 6.1 users received the latest version of Gnome Web, including all the security, compatibility, and performance improvements from the latest Webkit. Similarly, Captive Network Assistant has also received an update with the latest Webkit. The latest versions of GNOME Archive Manager and GNOME Document Viewer were also made available thanks to Flatpak. It's worth noting that some of the latest open source operating systems released this past month still offer older versions of these applications than are available in OS 6.1. We are very proud and excited to be able to distribute the latest GNOME 42 version applications on a stable and long-term supported operating system.
Work for the elementaryOS 7.0 release is being done at the same time, and currently has enhancements planned such as:
- AppCenter will introduce automatic updates, especially for flatpak applications. They have also removed the notice for apps coming from alternative stores. In addition, they have improved performance and navigation is more reliable.
- The Music app will be rewritten to improve on some changes.
- Several applications have redesigned themselves or their icons, such as the photos, calendar, mail and multitasking apps.
It is already known that the codename for elementaryOS 7.0 will be Horus, and it shouldn't be long before they announce a final release date.
