EA buys Codemasters: will it affect Linux games?

EA logo, Codemasters

EA It has created great video game titles, in fact, it was the one that made the official Formula 1 titles (2000-2002) before it passed into the hands of Codemasters. With the change to Codemasters, F1 has reached Linux in some of its editions, which has been liked by many gamers who use the penguin platform and want to play this fantastic racing simulator.

For its part, Codemasters They have also been the creators of great titles throughout their trajectory, such as the famous Colin McRae Rally. However, they have not been without criticism, since their first versions of the F1 left much to be desired in terms of optimization, and many users complained about it ... Fortunately, that changed with the following versions.

Be that as it may, what we do have to be thankful for is that some of these video games have also been ported to Linux. Something that could be affected by the purchase of EA. Now, the entire catalog of titles developed and in development of the company will pass to the American. A purchase that has been a surprise, since the British seemed that it would be bought by Take-Two, but eventually accepted EA's offer.

The purchase will be completed on March 31, 2021, at which time it will become part of Electronic Arts, owner of EA Sports, which will be the one that happens to develop these F1 video games if the situation does not change. And, in addition, it would add an important portfolio of driving simulation titles, such as EA's Need for Speed, to which must be added the licenses of the aforementioned F1, Dirt, Grid and Project Cars.

The question is ... will EA continue to contribute titles to Linux, even allowing Feral Interactive ports or will you be more reluctant to do so? I see it complicated if they do not change their attitude, since they have been constantly denying video games for the Linux platform ... but I hope I am wrong.

And looking at the focus of EA, neither they are, nor does it come to them whether or not their titles run on Linux…. Personally, I think that this news for "us" is bad (although it is still too early to draw conclusions ... [Hence they surprise us]) .-
    Best regards
