DuckDuckGo Email Protection: Duck protects your email. so you can do it

duckduckgo email protection

With the use of the network becoming more widespread and exhaustive, it is important to protect yourself. As for the mail, it may be important to use one to register in the different services, especially in those in which we do not trust 100%. It is worth avoiding surprises and that our mail, the main one, is filled with junk mail. Thinking about that, there are services like firefox relay, and from this week we can already use DuckDuckGo Email Protection.

The company already allows anyone to use DuckDuckGo Email Protection, and has published a FAQ in which they explain everything there is to know. For example, that in the mails also there may be trackers that reveal certain information about what we do with messages. One of the things that DuckDuckGo Email Protection does is eliminate these trackers, that is, act as a filter beyond hiding our real email address.

DuckDuckGo Email Protection removes trackers from your emails

You may be surprised to learn that 70% of emails contain trackers that can detect when you opened a message, where you were when you opened it, and what device you were using. As if that wasn't creepy enough, this email data can be used to profile you, including directing you to advertisements, and influencing the content you see online. Have you ever opened an email and seen an ad related to it shortly after? Yes, blame the email trackers. This data about you is also often sent directly to third parties, probably without your consent.

Among what the service offers, we have:

  • Email address @duck.com. It is not real, it is an alias, but as if it were, as we will explain later.
  • It removes various types of hidden email trackers and allows you to create unlimited private email addresses on the fly, without the need to switch email providers or apps.
  • Features like Link Tracking Protection that helps prevent tracking on email links, Smart Encryption that helps with unencrypted email links, and the ability to reply directly from Duck Addresses.

There are two ways to sign up: on the DuckDuckGo mobile app (iOS/Android), have the latest version, open Settings and select Email Protection; on the desktop, go to duckduckgo.com/email while using the browser extension (provide link if you don't have one) and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once registered, we can give our address mymail@duck.com to protect us, or create random addresses if we trust the service a little less. The good thing is that, if we need to respond, the response is made from the email address even if we respond from the same email. The extension can be uninstalled/deactivated once the email has been created, but it will be necessary if we want to create new addresses.

DuckDuckGo ensures that they do not check any of our emails, so, in theory, it's all conveniences and benefits.
