digiKam 8.0 arrives by uploading to Qt 6 and improving support for different formats

digikam 8.0

In the next few hours, or already on the weekend, KDE will make the launch of digikam 8.0. Being part of the "extragear" application group, their updates do not usually coincide with KDE Gear releases, nor do their numbering follow the pattern of the year, the months of April, August or December and three point updates. Getting here is coming soon, but it's still not featured on the front page of an official page that still shows v7.10 as the newest.

Before announcing an availability, any developer must upload the new to your servers, and sometimes download and test it to confirm that there is no problem. That is what has already happened, that digiKam 8.0 can already be downloaded, but maybe it is worth waiting and downloading it when the release becomes official, or better yet, wait a little longer and use the version from the official repositories of our distribution Linux.

What's new in digiKam 8.0

  • They have moved up to Qt 6.
  • Support has been added for exporting to JPEG-XL, WebP and AVIF, formats that can also be converted to when importing images from our camera (which is not new, but supports importing iPhone photos).
  • Support for float16 in TIFF.
  • Support for libjasper 4.0.
  • It now uses ExifTool 12.59, G'Mic-Qt 3.2.2, and Libraw 20230403.
  • New option to write metadata to files.
  • Support for performing metadata write operations to DNG and RAW files.
  • Other news that will be revealed in the release note.

As we have already mentioned, digiKam 8.0 It is now available to download, but its availability has yet to be announced. For those who want to try it now, the AppImage is available at this link. AppImages are packages that contain the main software and dependencies on themselves, like Snaps and Flatpaks, and are executed by double-clicking on them, for which it may be necessary to mark it as executable and even install a dependency, such as the Ubuntu case.
