Deskreen turns any screen into a secondary one and works flawlessly on Linux with zero fuss

Years ago, when I started writing, I remember having a desktop computer connected to the PlayStation screen that I used as a secondary to, for example, write while presenting an event. Although the screen of our equipment is large, an extra one can come in handy, and for that reason companies like Apple presented their Sidecar a while ago and the next macOS will still go further. If what we need is only to "enlarge" the screen of our equipment, deskgreen It is an incredible tool, especially when you try it and know a few things.

Deskreen is "FOSS", that is, free and open source. Once installed, although in Linux we can use its AppImage, all we have to do is connect the screen to the same network where the main computer is and connect, something that is not complicated at all. Once connected, we can see in the secondary display the entire desktop or just one application.

Deskreen is free, free and open source

To connect the displays, simply do the following:

  1. We open Deskreen.
  2. If we have a smart device with a camera, we can scan the QR code that appears on the screen. If there is no camera available, we can copy the address you provide to any browser.
  3. Once connected, we click on "Allow".
  4. Then we choose if we want the full screen to be reflected or just a window.
  5. If we choose a window, now we have to choose the one of an application that we have open.
  6. Once we have selected what we want to reflect, we click on «Confirm».

The support of the application is a bit surprising, that is, where we can use it. Works on devices like the iPhone, and also on smart TVs with webOS, although the refreshment in this operating system is not the best.

The application starts in English, but it is translated into Spanish and we can choose our language from the options gear. From the same section we can also choose the dark theme. And if sharing the screen in this simple and fast way seems little, it should also be mentioned that Deskreen support multiple displays and mirror different windows. What it does not support, at least in my tests, is the sound, but that should not be a problem if our intention is to be more productive in our work. For example, I have tested it to see on my tablet what I was writing in Atom in real time so as not to have to divide the screen of my laptop, and everything works perfectly.

Available for Linux, macOS, and Windows

Deskreen is available for Windows, macOS and Linux from the developer page. Linux users can download its AppImage, so it is not even necessary to install anything to be able to enjoy everything that this tool can offer us. It is also available as a DEB package (Debian / Ubuntu) and Arch Linux users have it in AUR.
