Debian 9.5 is officially released

Debian logo

During the last hours a new version of Debian has been released, a version that we have to say is no such thing. Debian 9.5 is an update to Debian 9 Stretch, the latest stable release of Debian. Debian 9.5 is like Ubuntu LTS releases, maintenance and update versions of the main packages in the distribution.

Thus, Debian 9.5 does not represent anything new in the distribution but it does make the distribution more secure and stable if possible.Debian 9.5 can now be obtained through the distribution installation ISO images and also from the distribution repositories, the latter can be achieved by executing the command:

sudo aptitude upgrade

Updating to this version is important and necessary, at least if we want to have a safe and stable operating system. Debian 9.5 incorporates 100 security patches and 91 bug fixesImportant figures to take into account for the security of our operating system, if we use Debian as a Gnu / Linux distribution for our computer.

The platforms supported by Debian 9.5 remain the same and no major updates have been incorporated, i.e. Debian 9.5 will not ship with new versions of Gnome or Plasma, it will also not include new desktops or new versions of GTK or Qt libraries, more than Debian 9 Stretch introduced with its release.

It is important to be reiterative since there are still some deceptions with the "new" versions of Gnu / Linux distributions. Regarding security patches and bug fixes, we have to say that many apply to programs related to the world of the server and web development. So these patches affect programs like Apache2, Postgresql, Gitlab, Python, Samba or openSSL to mention some of these security patches and bug fixes. On the other hand something normal since Debian is still quite successful in the Server world.

Debian is one of the most popular and widely used Gnu / Linux distributions for both the Server world and the Desktop world. And all this thanks to what it offers: a stability and freedom that few operating systems have.
