Last Saturday was given to get to know a new version of Debian Jessie, a version known as Debian 8.8. This release of Debian is not a new release but rather a maintenance release. A version that adds several security patches and bug fixes for the proper functioning of the distribution.
Specifically, we have learned that Debian 8.8 contains more than 90 security patches and 68 bugs fixed, which makes it a mandatory version to have on our computer if we use it with this operating system.
The version known as Debian 8.8 contains security patches that affect applications such as MySQL, LibreOffice, MariaDB, Php5, Firefox or Samba. That is, programs that many of us use daily and of course essential for system and server administrators.
Also in this version certain packages have been removed due to being obsolete or are no longer developed, such as the owncloud or grive packages. These packages will no longer be in Debian after the update.
Debian 8.8 is the latest version that improves Debian security
During the next few days Debian users will receive Debian 8.8, however users who want to install it on a computer have to wait. The installation ISO images are not yet available so it cannot be installed on new computers.
Debian 9 will be the new version to be released this year, but while that happens, Debian 8.7 or 8.8 are two quite interesting options for many. However, Debian is the base distribution for many famous distributions.
Remember that Debian 8.8 it is not a new version but it is a maintenance version. Which means that the update does not have to be mandatory nor will it essentially change anything. But since security patches have been included, updating them is almost mandatory, at least if we want to have a safe and stable operating system.
