Colossal Cave Adventure: One of the First Video Games Returns

Colossal Cave Adventure

1

Colossal Cave Adventure It was one of the first computer video games in history, which came in 1976. Well, now it is reborn thanks to an open source project that intends to implement it again. That's right, at that time when Gerald Ford became president in the US and some guys created Apple, you could also play one of the first video games that appeared as long as you had access to a DEC PDP-10 mainframe, which certainly there were not many lucky ones ...

It was ADVENT, and decades after this, the very Eric S Raymond has brought the adventure back as an open source project. It is a text-based adventure game, so do not expect remastered graphics and impressive effects, it is about bringing back to life that title that was available only to a few, making it now enjoyed by many. A kind of primitive WoW (World of WarCraft).

Raymond himself has explained your new project in which he has interfered: «The Original Adventure was the origin of many things. The text adventure game, dungeon games, and other genres of computer games as we know them today would not exist without ADVENT (as it was known in its original form for PDP-10 machines). ». Certainly something primitive if you compare it with current video games, but surely there is more than one nostalgic that you will like.

Eric has hinted that he has brought it back since it is one of the codes that deserves to be in any great harckers historical museum. It also raises some questions regarding the originality of the code and the possible modifications that the source code allows, but with the current version control the question is settled, since an original version of the video game could be maintained and preserved at the same time as it is allowed to improve the code to generate improvements in it or even forks.

If you are interested, the C code is in GitLab.
