CODE 6.4, a distro to implement LibreOffice Online

Collabora has released the release of the platform CODE 6.4 (Collabora Online Development Edition), providing a specialized distribution for implementation speed boat tour by LibreOffice Online and organizing remote collaboration with an office suite through the Web to achieve similar functionality to Google Docs and Office 365.

The layout is designed as a preconfigured container for the Docker system and it is also available as packages for popular Linux distributions. The developments used in the product are placed in the public repositories LibreOffice, LibreOfficeKit, loolwsd (Web Services Daemon) and loleaflet. (Web client).

CODE includes all the necessary components to run LibreOffice Online Server and provides a quick start and state of the art LibreOffice for the Web.

In addition, provides web browser support for working with documents, spreadsheets and presentations, including the ability to collaborate with multiple users who can make changes, leave comments, and answer questions simultaneously.

Each user's contribution, current issues, and cursor positions are highlighted in different colors. To organize cloud storage of documents, Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile and Pydio systems can be used.

The editing interface displayed in the browser is formed using the standard LibreOffice engine and enables a completely identical display of the document structure with the desktop version.

The interface is rendered using the HTML5 GTK library backend to render the output of GTK applications in a web browser window.

Standard LibreOfficeKit is used for calculations, mosaics, and multi-layered document design. A special web services daemon is used to organize server-browser interaction, transfer images with parts of the interface, organize caching of image fragments, and work with document storage.

What's new in CODE 6.4

In this new version presented, we can find whate version numbering is synchronized with Collabora Office products, so after version 4.2, the CODE 6.4 version was immediately formed. The change reflects the initiative to bring all Collabora products, including applications for mobile platforms, to a common numbering.

By default, a new NotebookBar toolbar is offered, designed in the Ribbon style and repeating the panel of the same name from the LibreOffice desktop edition. The panel offers easier-to-read buttons and an intuitive tabbed toolbar.

Added a collapse mode for the NotebookBar panel, allowing you to switch to using a compact one-line layout, in which only the tabs are visible (one click on the active tab hides the tools and a second click returns).

In the top left-hand corner, regardless of minimizing NotebookBar, now a drop down menu is displayed (hamburger) with additional settings and tools to manage collaboration and language capabilities.

Besides that Redesigned Writer, Impress and Calc based on NotebookBar and tabs. For users who are used to the classic panel, there is an opportunity to return the old interface by setting the user_interface parameter to "classic" in the loolwsd.xml file.

It is also mentioned that CODE was rewritten to improve performance, the new implementation allowed us to add innovations such as freezing rows and columns: after clicking the freeze button in the panel or in the menu «View> Freeze rows», when scrolling, the selected row or column remains visible on the left or in the top.

Of the other changes that stand out:

  • Added tools for collaborating with PDF files.
  • Users can now analyze a PDF document together, attach annotations, and add comments.
  • Improved display of presentations, diagrams, images, and forms when working with OOXML formats used in Microsoft Office.
  • Including additional support for displaying translucent text, improved support for SmartArt, better display of color gradients in presentations.

Finally it is mentioned that the works proposed in the CODE 6.4 version will be included in the LibreOffice 7.1 standard.
