La Swedish company Cobham Gaisler and Spanish company fentISS deepen their relationship to continue the unstoppable success of ISA RISC-V in Europe. A fruitful relationship for the future of Europe's aerospace industry, providing hardware solutions such as NOEL-V and LEON5 processors, as well as XtratuM Next Generation (XNG) hypervisor software.

A binomial that provides a complete ecosystem with open technology thanks to the adoption of the open source ISA RISC-V. Additionally, Cobham Gaisler is one of the members of RISC-V International, so it is fully involved in the direction and future development of this ISA.

«We have gained a very positive experience with Cobham Gaisler products for the development of our high quality board software solutions. Through this collaboration, we will be able to achieve even better results and establish a good market fit for our solutions.»Francisco Gómez, CEO of fentISS, commented.

NOEL-V is a synthesizable VHDL processor of the swedish company which is based on the RISC-V architecture. It allows executing up to two instructions in parallel for each clock cycle. While XtratuM is the hypervisor of the spanish company, specially designed for real-time embedded systems where safety, reliability and efficiency are critical, such as in aerospace systems.

"Since Cobham Gaisler introduced radiation-hardened GR712RC multicore processors to European space computers, we have been improving support for space-time isolation between partitions and for handling inter-core interference. While these mechanisms are already available in the quad-LEON4FT GR740, further improvements will be made to the LEON5 IP core architecture, and by using RISC-V's mode separation and its H extension, soon available in NOEL-V . We look forward to collaborating more closely with fentISS, taking advantage of XNG's hypervisor support for the multiple architecture of LEON and NOEL-V.”Said Jan Andersson, Engineering Director at Cobham Gaisler.

The fruit of collaboration

Space, RISC-V

With this close collaboration, Cobham Gaisler and fentISS are confident of boosting their product portfolios and achieving alignment of marketing actions in order to gain visibility in the aerospace market, for which their products are directed.

As a result of this collaboration, a platform capable of running various operating systems in robust and isolated environments (spatially and temporally) is achieved, and making use of the paravirtualization over Cobham hardware, such as LEON3FTs with GR712RC dual-core processors (Rad hard) and LEON4FT with four GR740 cores also radiation hardened. Some chips that will be used in missions such as MERLIN, SVOM, SWOT, and JUICE, as well as PLATINUM.

The PLATINO project will be the base of the constellations of Earth Observation and Telecommunications of the Italian Space Agency.

In addition to the adaptation of XtratuM XNG to the LEON3, LEON4 and the new LEON5 processors, the activities on the adaptation on the RISC-V architectures, such as the processor NOEL-V by Crobham Gaisler, are taking place in the project  De-RISC, coordinated by fintISS and funded by the European Commission.

So there is also research and development beyond the gringo and Chinese blocks? Good to know. The pity is that it occurs in areas as far removed from mass consumption and influence on society, at least in the short term, as space technology. But I guess that's better than nothing.
