Clem posts the guide to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1 from previous versions. This you must do

Linux-Mint-21.1, update

Just yesterday, Clement Lefebvre announced the official launch of Linux Mint 21.1 see, and we we echoed the news. In our article we advanced that the official guide to update from previous versions would soon be published, which although it is true that it is a simple process for those who have already done it before, it is also true that it may not be so for those who are going to do it. to do for the first time, and less if they have been in Linux for a short time.

For this reason, after each new release, this guide is published. It's the official process, and it's worth waiting for it to be released because you might as well tell us about any known issues and how to fix them. This has not been the case in the guide to upload to Linux Mint 21.1, and we started by saying that it is already possible climb from Vanessa (21), but nothing of other versions is mentioned. The process should be the same in all the supported ones, but we leave the data there.

Steps to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1

  1. Make a backup. The project took over Timeshift and turned it into XApp (Linux Mint applications) this past summer in the northern hemisphere, so you can already imagine what backup software they recommend. Timeshift makes copies of the entire operating system periodically, so all our data will always be safe as long as we have an external hard drive or space on a different partition.
  2. We prepare the update: you have to deactivate the screen saver and update the operating system packages that are to be updated, if necessary. Being an Ubuntu-based distribution, this should be possible by opening a terminal and typing the command "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade".
  3. With the backup done and all the packages updated, in the next step you have to start the process of updating to Linux Mint 21.1. You have to open the update manager, click the refresh button and check if there is a new version of mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info. If there are, they are installed. If not, you can go to the next point.
  4. Now you have to run the system update by choosing Edit/Update to “Linux Mint 21.1 Vera” (see FAQ section if the option does not appear).

Update from the Edit menu

  1. Follow the instructions on the screen. The upgrade software is similar to a fresh operating system installation, and is lossless. Basically it is to accept each step. If during the process we are asked if we want to keep or replace the configuration files, we must choose to replace them.

  1. At the end of the process, all that remains is to restart.

Recommendations and frequently asked questions

Lefebvre has put it as part of the process, but we have moved it to this section because, as he himself says, it is optional. Linux Mint 21.1 has introduced some design changes. The desktop, the colors and the cursor are different. In the guide it is as the penultimate step, and a reboot is recommended for all the changes to be applied properly. I prefer to restart, make the changes that seem appropriate and restart again. Ok, you can call me handy.

For those who prefer how it looked before, it can be changed from the theme settings. The Linux Mint 20.2 image is available under the name “Mint-Y-Legacy.

In the FAQ section, Clem explains:

  • If the update does not appear, check that you have the latest versions of mintupdate (5.9.6 or higher) and mint-upgrade-info (1.2.0 or higher) and restart the Update Manager by starting it again from the menu Of applications.
  • If the latest versions of mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info are not yet available on your servers, you should switch to the default repositories.
  • This rarely happens, but if you've ever gotten stuck and couldn't log in again, switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type "killall cinnamon-screensaver" (or "killall mate-screensaver » in MATE). CTRL+ALT+F7 or CTRL+ALT+F8 is used to return to the session.
