How to delete the history of our web browser

The web browser has become an important tool for any user and for any operating system. That is why there are many tutorials that speak to us and tell us how to customize and maintain this fabulous tool.

On this occasion we are going to tell you how to erase the history of our web browser, a simple and important task for the proper functioning of web browsing. Skipping this task may cause the program runs slow and even clumsy If not only we have not deleted the history but everything that it brings with it, the files and the cache.

In addition, we will not only see this process in a single web browser but we will see it in several web browsers. In particular we will see how to clear history in Firefox, Chromium, Brave and the new Falkon. They are the main web browsers but it is true that they are not the only ones that work with the history nor the only ones that allow you to delete the history, but they are the most popular and used web browsers in the Gnu / Linux world.

For those who are novice users, we have to say that history is the web browser's browsing report. A report that in many cases does not come alone but brings the url of the web page, the cookies of this web page and even certain elements of the web page such as images, form data or data from the autocomplete process. This gradually makes the web browser fill up and become heavier. Hence the importance of clearing the history.

Mozilla Firefox

The process of clearing the history within the Mozilla web browser is a very simple task. First we have to go to the upper right and click on the icon of several bars. In the menu that appears we go to Preferences. A window like this will appear. In it we go to the option Privacy & Security and on the right side we will see everything related to the History. We will recognize a large button called “Clear History”. This will erase all the history of our web browser. But before deleting it permanently, a window like the following will appear:

Mozilla Firefox Settings

We mark the period of time that we want to delete and press the button to clear the history.

Unlike other browsers, Mozilla Firefox allows us to customize the elements of the history that we want to delete or not. On the screen that appears after pressing Privacy & Security (see above to find out how to get there) we find several options that we can check to activate or uncheck. Here we tell you what they mean:

  • Permanent private browsing mode: The navigation that we carry out is anonymous and certain elements such as forms, cookies, etc. .. are not saved in the web browser.
  • Remember search and form history: This option remembers the forms that we have used as well as the searches carried out in search fields.
  • Clear history when Firefox closes: This option allows us to clean the web browsing once we have closed the web browser. If we mark this option, we have to press the configure button to indicate which elements will be deleted and which ones will not.
And at the top of everything we will have a drop-down menu that will allow us to remember the history, not remember it or use a special configuration.

Chromium / Chrome

If we use Google Chrome or Chromium, the process is just as simple, but personally it seems to me that it is less complete than in Mozilla Firefox.

In this web browser we have two options to delete the history. The first would be to press the combination "Ctrl + H" and the history of the web browser will appear. On the left side we will see an option that says "delete browsing data" whose option will delete all the history of the web browser.

There is another method to accomplish this task. We have to go to Settings and among all the options we have to go to Clear browsing data after which a window like the one below will appear. will allow us to customize the elements of the history that we want to delete or eliminate.

The process is just as simple but not as complete as in Mozilla Firefox.

Brave

Within the Brave web browser, the process of clearing the history is very easy and as simple as it happens in Chromium. To erase the history we have to go to Settings or Preferences. A window like this will appear:

Brave browser screenshot

In it we go to the Security option and in it we mark the options that we want to clean or delete, including the history. After marking the options that we want to delete, we have to press the button "Clear navigation data now ..."

And with this, the browsing history in our Brave browser will be deleted.

Falkon (formerly known as Qupzilla)

Clear history in Falkon or also known as Qupzilla it is more complicated but just as effective as other methods. In this case, we also have two ways to clear or delete the browsing history. The quickest and easiest method is to press la key combination Ctrl + Shift + Del. This will erase all the history that we have in the web browser. But, like other browsers, through Settings or Configuration we can delete the history or customize this task.

Within Settings we go to the Navigation tab. A tab that will show the following window:

Screenshot of Falkon

Now we go to the local storage tab and choose the options we want, that is, if we want Qupzilla to erase the history when closing, if we want the cache to be stored, if we want to save the history or not, etc ... When we have everything ready, we go to the apply button and then press the accept button for the configuration to be applied. With this we will have erased the history and if we have marked it, the cache of the web pages that we have visited or saved.

This is all?

No, it is not all, but as we have said before they are the most famous and used web browsers within the Gnu / Linux world. And they are also the most popular that allow you to delete your browsing history. There are still web browsers that do not allow you to delete the history since they do not store or have history. A case that has caught my attention is Min, a lightweight web browser that you don't have a clear way to clear the history (at least I have not found it nor have I seen it in the Github repository) and like this web browser, many others do not allow it.

In any case, from here we recommend erasing the history periodically or marking it like that within the web browser so that our program does not slow down so much, because if we use it a lot, after a month we may have registered more than a thousand pages and if each one occupies 1 mb, we can have a 1 Gb space that has to move our Linux and our web browser, hence our recommendation and this tutorial.
