Chrome 99 introduces improvements in 2D layers, among other new features designed for developers

Chrome 99

eight and four weeks, Google released updates to its web browser. It changed its number, two months ago it was v98 and yesterday it was v99, but in neither case can we talk about major updates. Or not for the user, since a few hours ago we have available Chrome 99 and many of those changes are more on the inside than on the outside. That is to say, it brings improvements, the browser is better, but one cannot speak of showy changes.

Now, things are not the same for developers. Several new APIs have been included in Chrome 99 that will make the the interaction with the web pages and the development for them is better. For example, they have included improvements to support for SVG filters. The highlights of what has arrived in Chrome 99 are the following:

Chrome 99 highlights

  • CSS Cascading Layers add a structured way to organize and balance concerns within a single origin to have a certain cascading order for rules from the same origin appropriately.
  • HTML input elements now have a showPicker() method to display a browser's picker for input elements such as colors, files, temporary, and more.
  • New functionality for the Canvas 2D API for context loss/restore events, a reset function, tapered gradients, better support for SVG filters, and other improvements.
  • New handwriting recognition API that can make use of handwriting recognition services provided by the underlying operating system.
  • The CSS math function calc() now allows infinity and NaN values.
  • Intl Enumeration API.

Chrome 99 It is now available for all supported systems from your official website. Users of Debian/Ubuntu based systems, where the official repository is usually installed after installing the browser for the first time, already have the new packages waiting as an update. Installation on other distributions will depend on them, such as those based on Arch Linux that have it in AUR, but not yet updated.
