Last night, Google released Chrome 75 alongside the same version of Chromium. It is a minor release that comes with the most outstanding novelty of a new section in the settings called "Privacy and security" from where, among other things, we can activate an option to prevent websites from tracking us. But it has also come up with other surprises that have not been announced with great fanfare, one of them being in the experimental phase.
It is a reading mode. Firefox users have been enjoying this option for years and in Safari on iOS and OS X, now macOS, it was already there long before. Now this reading mode has reached Chrome 75, but it is in the experimental phase. So much so that it cannot be activated by a simple click, nor does it have a clearly visible icon as we can in Firefox or Safari, among others. Activate Chrome 75 reading mode
- Logically, the first step is to open Chrome, unless you are already reading Linux Adictos from the.
- Next, we type the following in the address bar (URL) and press Enter: chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode
- In the first option and marked in yellow (at least in my case) we will see "Enable Reader Mode". We change "Disabled" to "Enabled".
- It will ask us to restart Chrome. We do. To do this, just close and reopen the browser.
- Once back in Chrome, we will not see any icon to activate the reading mode. Right now, we remember that it is in the experimental phase, we have to go to the three points on the top right (options) and choose «Convert page». To return to the original view, we will click on the page back button (the arrow to go back one page).
And that's it. What we will see is something like the header image: it will only show the article itself with its images, no links, ads or suggestions. It is likely that something is not perfectly visible, but that is something that also happens in Firefox or any other web browser that includes read mode.
In what we notice the most that it is in the experimental phase is in the absence of functions. Other browsers, like Firefox, allow us to choose a dark mode or a sepia mode. It also allows us to open or close the distribution of the article more, change the font, expand the separation between lines, save the article in Pocket (because it is your property) or even ask you to read it to us. Chrome's reading mode currently doesn't offer any options. Yes we can enlarge or reduce the view of the article, but it is a general option that has nothing to do with its reading mode.
Other new features included in this version
- The Web Share API has been updated, which will allow us to share files in Chrome web-apps from a dialog box like in any other app.
- Numeric literals have been modified to be easier to read by adding support for underscores.
- Now there is a low latency alternative to the outdated NaCl / PPAPI solution.

The new version is already available for Linux, macOS and Windows from their website. For those of us who already have it installed, the arrival will be gradual, so it is probably not yet available on all computers. If you still do not see the update, the options are either to install the version that is on its official website or to have a little more patience. Chromium 75 is also available, but its arrival will be identical to that of the "closed" version of Google's browser.
